Darryl Happy For Jill To Keep Doing What She's Doing

By Jeff Collerson
Jill Doo notched her fifth successive win on Friday at LADBROKES GARDENS but owner-trainer-breeder Darryl Wilson isn't getting carried away and she is likely to dodge the up-coming major races to contest low grade events.

Wilson, who has been a trainer since 2000, said: "Jill Doo is a terrific little chaser but is a rung below being a real top notcher.

"I will nominate her for The Gardens again this weekend and if she doesn't get a run there, I will roll her over to Wenty Park.

"There should be a couple more low grade wins for her in town.''

Wilson said he enjoyed a special thrill when Jill Doo led all the way to score her first Wentworth Park win late last month because she defeated her litter brother and kennelmate Jack Doo in a nippy 30.05.

"I only have five greyhounds in work so I was stoked to see two of them run the quinella at Wentworth Park,'' Wilson.

"Jack Doo is capable of winning in town but he is a bad kennel dog so will be best suited at Wenty when he can get into an early race.

"Until that Wentworth Park quinella the biggest buzz I have had out of greyhound racing was when I won the Summer Cup at Taree two years running in 2015 and 2016 with Darcy Doo.''

Greyhound racing continues to be unique among the three racing codes in that so many of its participants breed and race their own dogs for several generations.

Wilson's remarkable sequence of success with his own "breed" began when he bought a puppy called Red SanDAVE from fellow breeder and trainer DAVE Richardson.

"After I raced Red SanDAVE, DAVE and his wife Sandra gave me that dog's brother SanDAVE Law because he was a difficult dog to train and after I had some success with him I started breeding with another of their greyhounds, thar dog's sister DAVE-lass">SanDAVE Lass.

"SanDAVE Lass won first up at Wentworth Park in 2005 and she produced Dookie Doo, who won three races, and became the mother of Sally Doo, who win nine.

"Sally Doo is the dam of Jill Doo and Jack Doo, along with their litter brother Mickey Doo, who I sold shortly after he was educated.

"Mickey Doo broke in sensationally and at his first trial after leaving the breakers he clocked 17.91 over 314m at Taree, time that was unheard of for a puppy.

"I was immediately asked if I wanted to sell him and when I replied that the offer would need to be good the buyer said how does $25,000 sound?

"I still work for a living and the dogs are my hobby so that was too much money to knock back.''

Mickey Doo went on to become a star for trainer Mark Davidson, winning 16 of 32 starts and nearly $73,000, although he has not raced since a mishap in August.

Box draw for Saturday night's $25,000 to the winner Ladbrokes Christmas Cheer at Wentworth Park has set the scene for another duel between Newcastle Cup winner Cawbourne Magic and runner-up Stagger Out Lee.

In the Cup final at LADBROKES GARDENS Cawbourne Magic came from box six to beat the fast finishing Stagger Out Lee, who had box two, by four lengths.

Next Saturday Stagger Out Lee will again exit box two while Cawbourne Magic will wear the pink box eight rug.

Victorian visitors Mepunga Ruby and Moraine Suzie have drawn boxes three and six respectively.
