Ladbrokes Newcastle Cup (G3)

The Magic Continues For The Lord Team

By Michael Cowley
Promising stayer Cawbourne Magic has delivered trainer Jodie Lord her second feature race victory in the space of 24 hours.

The premier trainer claimed the Group 1 Sportsbet Megastar final at Dapto on Thursday evening with Good Odds Emma, then on Friday night Cawbourne Magic produced a wonderful performance to win the Ladbrokes Newcastle Cup Final at the Gardens.

Cawbourne Magic overcame a checkered run - ironically being baulked and checked by his kennelmate Silver Luck on numerous occasions – to reel in the breakaway leader Our Amelia, and race away from an emphatic win in 41.55s.

Second went to recent Group 1 winner Stagger Out Lee who made up many, many lengths to grab the runner-up place albeit 4 lengths behind the winner, while Silver Luck battled on well for third a further 1½ lengths away.

The Cup victory took Cawbourne Magic’s record to 16 wins and 17 placings from just 40 starts and moved his prizemoney tally above the $200,000 mark.

But it’s his recent form that is the most impressive, winning seven of his past eight starts, the only blemish was a second to Stagger Out Lee in that Group 1, the Bold Trease at Sandown last month.

The win is the Lord camp’s second success in the Newcastle Cup in the past four editions of the race, with Just Terms winning for the trainer in 2019 and continues a phenomenal 2022 as the year draws to a close.

“He's very, very impressive,” said Lord kennel representative Paul Mills, fresh from collecting the Megastar trophy a night earlier, of Cawbourne Magic. “There should be a few more group races in him too. He’s just coming of age.

“His track sense has really improved although his kennelmate nearly brought him undone … it’s funny how they can find each other, but he got the money and he was impressive.”

Asked what the Lord camp have in mind for Cawbourne Magic, Mills suggested the upcoming Christmas Cheer at Wentworth Park on December 17, then chasing the big staying events

“You nearly have to travel with him, that’s where the Group races are and there’s plenty more in store.”
