Jeff Collerson's Wenty Round Up

By Jeff Collerson
FAHEY's Magic's brilliant all-the-way comeback win at Wentworth Park on Saturday night has earned the Jane Carruthers-trained bitch a crack at the group 2 Lismore Cup heats at Casino on December 13.

Resuming after a six weeks' break, Fahey's Magic took her record to eight wins from 13 starts with a slick 29.86 performance in a 520m fifth grade, time which matched her best Wentworth Park figures posted at her previous outing on October 19.

After the race Jane Carruthers' husband John said: "I think our greyhound can get down to 29.70 at Wentworth Park because tonight's run was her first hit-out over 520m for well over a month.

"Fahey's Magic is owned by Chad Pearce who has a concreting business at Casino so naturally he would love to see us bring his greyhound to his home town for the Lismore Cup.''

The December 13 heats of the Cup will be followed by a $40,000 to the winner final a week later.

Fahey's Magic

Fahey's Magic's win was timely as Sandown's Melbourne Cup was held on Saturday night, and exactly 24 years earlier Jane and John Carruthers had won Victoria's biggest race with their champion sprinter Rapid Journey.

Wyndra All Class is also set to pursue a major race after notching a remarkable fifth straight Wentworth Park victory within a month on Saturday night.

The Daniel Gatt-trained bitch duelled for the early lead with Falcon Fly but got clear on the back straight before comfortably staving off a late finish by Zipping Orlando to win in 29.81.

Wyndra All Class is now scheduled to tackle the heats of the group 1 Dapto Megastar over 520m on Thursday night.

The Megastar has been a great race for the Gatt clan as trainer Daniel Gatt's brother Mark won the race with the mighty Oaks Road in 2011 and took out the final again 10 years later with Ritza Donna.

Fastest time of the night on Saturday was recorded by John Finn's outstanding all distance bitch Zipping Alabama, who came from fourth on the home bend to win the 520m Free-For-All in 29.74.

Although Zipping Alabama has won over 720m at Wentworth Park she won't be contesting Friday night's heats of the group 3 Newcastle Cup over 715m at LADBROKES GARDENS.

After Saturday night's powerful finishing win, Minnie Finn, the trainer's wife, said: "No, she won't be going to the Newcastle Cup because she is not a true stayer.

"We will be keeping her at Wenty in 520m races for a couple of weeks and then head to Brisbane for some big middle distance races at Albion Park early next year.''

Sam Mayer, who owns the top class David Vandyke-trained thoroughbred Skins, races Nangar Archie, who notched his second Wentworth Park win in a 520m fifth grade on Saturday, leading all the way in 30.18.

Trainer Caitlyn Brewer said after the race: "Sam is currently on a cruise but he phoned me immediately after Nangar Archie's win to let me know the whole ship was cheering the dog home.

"He bought Nangar Archie for $15,000 from the dog's breeder Dennis Barnes early in the greyhound's career and he has been a great buy.

"Nangar Archie is extremely honest but now I'll have to think about where to take him because he now becomes a fourth grader at Wenty on Saturday nights.''

In-form trainer David Smith had a night to remember at Wentworth Park on Saturday when his two runners, Tarawi Ferrari and Oreo Ethics, ran the quinella in the $8000 to the winner Ladbrokes Bet Ticker Dogs' Final over 520m.

Tarawi Ferrari led throughout from box eight in 29.98, with Oreo Ethics, who was first reserve but gained a start from box four, chasing his kennelmate from start to finish.
