Jeff Collerson's Wentworth Park Round Up

By Jeff Collerson
LIGHT And Lily, who gave Jordan Tweddle his biggest training success when she won last year's Group 1 Peter Mosman Opal at Wentworth Park, produced her fastest performance at headquarters for new trainer Mark Forner on Saturday night.

Light And Lily clocked 29.89 winning the Opal and posted her best Wenty 520m figures of 29.84 on May 12 last year but came out running and led throughout in 29.82 on Saturday, recording a sensational first split of 5.37.

She has now won each of two starts for Nowra-based Forner, who took over from Tweddle and his grandfather, co-trainer John Little, last month.

"We decided to give her to Mark because Jordan and I, myself in particular, needed to have a break from the sport,'' John Little said on Saturday.

"I have had greyhounds since I was 14 or 15, am about to turn 83, and have not enjoyed the best of health for the past 12 months or so.

"So we decided in fairness to Light And Lily's owners we should give her to someone who could bring out the best in her and we knew Mark would do that.''

Canya Wilder earned a crack at the $25,000 to the winner Casino Cup with his all-the-way win in his personal best Wentworth Park time of 29.92 on Saturday.

Canya Wilder won by a length from the luckless Fast Reason, who conquered She's A Pearl at Wentworth Park on October 26 and was badly hampered at the first turn on Saturday night.

After Saturday's race Canya Wilder's trainer John Thomas said: "He was a bit under done tonight because whenever I try to work him hard he tends to pull up sore.

"He had a bit of luck tonight because Nangar Archie, in box three, ran cover for Canya Wilder at the first turn.

"I intend getting Canya Wilder ready for the Casino Cup heats on November 18, with the 484m final a week later.

''I think that would be a good race for him and believe the track will suit him.''

Light And Lily set the 520m standard on Saturday with Red Hot Frankie and Fat Boy's Dream, who each won in 29.88, sharing second quickest time honours.

Red Hot Frankie again showed dazzling early pace for an all the way win while Fat Boy's Dream began cleanly and hit the front going through the catching pen to win the top grade race.

Red Hot Frankie has now earned $36,000 from five wins and three placings in nine Wentworth Park fifth grade appearances while Fat Boy's Dream ran wide at the first turn and collided with Reflections and Chasing Fernando before surging to the lead.

Trainer Geoff "Choc" Curtale refused a $35,000 offer for What A Tease early in the dog's career but the greyhound came from behind to notch his second Wentworth Park win on Saturday.

"Everyone said I was crazy when I knocked back that big money for the dog but tonight's win took his earnings to $32,500 and he is still not quite two years old,'' Curtale said.

"He had a great draw tonight but he tried hard to get beaten when he ran into the back of the second dog, Little Miss Kade, when he took off after the leader Cumbria Dave leaving the back straight.

"What A Tease has won a couple of middle distance races but I'm not sure if he will develop into a true 720m greyhound.''
