No Cup As Novak Will Step Up

Zipping Novak's sensational 29.47 fastest of the night performance at Wentworth Park on Saturday won't earn him a crack at the Melbourne Cup with trainer Jason Magri instead setting the dog for the Dapto Middle Distance Championship.

Heats of the 600m at Dapto race are on November 10 with the final, worth $25,000 to the winner, a week later.

"I think the Dapto 600m trip will suit Zipping Novak down to the ground,'' Magri said after Saturday's race.

"And I wasn't surprised to see him run 29.47 because I believe he is capable of going a bit quicker at Wenty.

"He got held up a couple of times in tonight's race.''

Grim Madara, who had been placed in seven of 10 Wentworth Park races before winning his heat of the Good Odds Harada Cup last Saturday, showed he has found a winning formula by toppling his more fancied kennelmate Punter's Bandit in Saturday night's $13,000 to the winner final.

Grim Madara began smartly from box six and despite being outpaced and relegated to third position entering the back straight, swept around the leaders to hit the front approaching the home bend.

It was little wonder Punter's Bandit was unable to run him down as Grim Madara stopped the clock at a fast 29.55 and ran home in a powerful 11.55.

The Andy Lord-trained Grim Madara's win was part of a winning treble for the Lord family, with Cawbourne Magic clocking a fast 41.69 in scoring over 720m for wife JODIE, and Andy backing up again with victory from Winlock All Over in 30.01 in a 520m event.

Trainer Jack Smith is re-assessing Red Hot Frankie after her all-the-way win in a personal best 29.64 at Wentworth Park on Saturday night.

"I have not made any big plans for her but while she isn't in the same league as dogs I've had like Feral Franky or Jungle Deuce, I might have to start thinking about taking Red Hot Frankie to Melbourne for a big race,'' Smith said.

Red Hot Frankie produced a blistering second split of 13.76 on Saturday and proved she is far from weak at the end of 520m, running home in a solid 11.79.

"When she can consistently clock quick sectional times like she has been running Red Hot Frankie is probably capable of winning a good race,'' Smith added.

On Saturday St Maarten broke through for a well deserved initial Wentworth Park win for trainer Fay Wotton, after being placed there on October 15 and 22.

After her dog's all the way win, Wotton explained that St Maarten can be difficult to train.

"He is totally over the top and I often struggle to hang on to him on the way to the boxes,'' Wotton said.

"He pulls so hard he even popped my shoulder out one night.

"I take St Maarten out to watch the stir-up whenever he races because I've found that goes some way towards calming him down for when he comes out on the track.''

Saturday's Free-For-All was taken out by prolific big race finalist Yuko Girl, who rocketed out of box eight and led all the way for trainer Sam Sultana in 29.70.

Those figures matched Yuko Girl's previous best Wentworth Park figures, recorded on June 4, and took her Wenty tally to eight wins from 21 starts.
