Frankie's Looking Red Hot In The Red

By Jeff Collerson
Wentworth Park's "pocket rocket" Red Hot Frankie ran the race of her life when second in a Good Odds Harada Cup heat last Saturday and looks set to atone after drawing box one there on Saturday night.

The whippet-like Red Hot Frankie, who raced at 23.7kg last week, will wear the red rug for only the second time in the winningedgeinvestments.com Stakes, a 520m fifth grade.

Last Saturday she jumped with her customary dash from box seven but was trapped outside the wide running Surprise Baby in the charge to the first turn and lost all chance.

Red Hot Frankie came again despite the early interference to go down by three lengths behind Grim Madara, who covered the 520m in a slick 29.92.

At her only previous race from box one Red Hot Frankie won over 516m at Dubbo by 11 lengths in 29.66, fastest time of the meeting.

Trainer Jack Smith said: "I was happy with her run last week because she did get forced wide in the early stages.

"My only concern on Saturday is that Alan Proctor's greyhound Von Say So, who has box two, has good early speed like Red Hot Frankie so I hope they don't come together in the run to the first turn.''

The box draw was kind to Smith as Red Hot Frankie's kennelmate Chinese Tonight, who is in the Ladbroke It! Stakes, a 520m fifth grade, has also drawn box one.

Chinese Tonight was badly away from box two when a strong finishing fourth at his Wentworth Park debut last Saturday and Smith said: "His run was okay because he had not previously seen the track, that was his trial.

"I think there is a fifth grade win or two in him and reckon he can get down to the low 30s for the Wenty 520m.''

Ddajki, named after a popular South Korean game, looks well placed in Saturday's opening event, the NSW GBOTA Welcome Stakes, a 520m fifth grade.

Ddajki has won his past three races and came from box four to lead from the first turn and win a similar race in an impressive 29.99 at Wentworth Park on October 19.

Trainer Andrew Crouch said: "My son Adam maps out our dogs' programming and noticed there were races for greyhounds with one to three wins at Wenty this Saturday.

"So this field will suit Ddajki and he should handle box five because he runs straight.

"His first stride isn't quick but he musters pace quickly and keeps on going.''

Trainer Rodney O'Brien blamed box five for On The Bus' distant sixth at Wentworth Park last Saturday and the dog is far better positioned in box two in this week's wentworthpark.com.au Stakes, a 520m fifth grade.

On The Bus showed good early zip last Saturday but was badly hampered trying to reach the rails in the run to the first turn.

"He is going really well, the box beat him tonight,'' O'Brien said after last week's race.

Another trainer sure to be pleased with this week's draw is Leo Vanderburg, whose bitch Surprise Baby has box six in Saturday's Ladbrokes Bet Ticker Stakes, a 520m fourth and fifth grade.

Surprise Baby is a wide runner and was a luckless third, from box three, to Grim Madara and Red Hot Frankie at Wentworth Park last week.

Before the race trainer Vanderburg said: "Surprise Baby is flying at the moment but she needs an outside alley.''

Sure enough, Surprise Baby ran wide from box three and collided heavily with Red Hot Frankie, who had drawn seven, in the charge to the first bend.

The collision ruined the prospects of both greyhounds, and Surprise Baby gets her chance from this week's wide draw.
