Star On The Path To MDC

By Jeff Collerson
Lightning Star is being set for the Dapto heats of the Million Dollar Chase on August 18 and is expected to make an impressive launch of that campaign at Wentworth Park on Saturday night.

Lightning Star, who has won seven of 18 starts, has box eight in the 520m wentworthpark.com.au Stakes, a 520m fifth grade, and trainer Cliff Bell has declared her "ideally positioned.''

Bell said: "She is desperate for an outside box because she needs room to move.

"Lightning Star won at Wentworth Park from box eight on July 9 before finishing fifth there from box four on July 16.

"She has not raced since but there has been nothing wrong, I just kept her away from Wenty for a couple of weeks to refresh her.

"Lightning Star has a good turn of pace and in trials at Dapto she has clocked a very quick first splt of 5.35 and recorded 29.70 for the 520m trip.

"Dapto is hosting Million Dollar Chase heats on August 18 and that series is her immediate goal.

"On Saturday she will need to do everything right because it is a strong field, particularly with the likes of Mr Determine drawn next to her in box seven.''

Lightning Star has won three of her past four outings and has led all the way in each of those victories.

South Coast hobby trainer John Reminis will lead out his first Wentworth Park starter on Saturday night when his greyhound French Vanilla exits box one in the NSW GBOTA Welcome Stakes, a 520m fifth grade.

French Vanilla resumed after a six weeks' break to win over 400m at Bulli on July 19, coming from midfield early and making light of a first turn check to race away and win by two lengths.

"I trialled her at Wentworth Park a couple of weeks ago and French Vanilla went well enough for me to bring her back to town,'' Reminis said.

"Box one looks good because she is a railer but in the past French Vanilla has been inclined to be more competitive when she is on the outside of her rivals.''

Showman Jack nailed the start for the first time in seven outings when he led throughout for a fast 29.77 win at Wentworth Park on July 20 and should only need to begin cleanly to take out Saturday night's #getyourgreyhoundon Stakes, a 520m fifth grade.

After his dog's July 20 win, trainer John Smart said: "Running 29.77 didn't surprise me, especially when he jumped in front.

"Before he began racing Showman Jack was clocking a sensational times in post-to-post slips at WP and as a result I have refused some massive offers for him.''

Smart bred Showman Jack from his former good staying bitch Lovelace, and won a race at Wentworth Park on July 20 with the dog's litter sister Esme Watson.

Saturday's Wentworth Park card features the first Sydney appearance of boom Queenslander Shipwreck, who has box eight in the 520m Free-For-All.

Shipwreck trialled a flying 29.64 at Wentworth Park on July 20 but has box eight and lacks early pace.

He ran down Zipping Kyrgios to win the State of Origin Match Race at Albion Park on July 14 and takes on that local star again on Saturday, along with National Sprint Championship contenders Mickey Doo, Zipping Maserati and Yuko Girl.

The return clash of National Distance Championship hopefuls Super Estrella (box two) and Tiger Jack (seven) in Saturday's top grade 720m event, the Ladbrokes Easy Form Stakes, promises to be a thriller.

Super Estrella led throughout before edging the fast finishing Tiger Jack out by a nose in a nail-biting finish of a similar Wentworth Park race last week.
