Age Is Not Making Them Weary

Saturday night's Ladbrokes Masters Stakes is shaping up as the most exciting veterans' event since Sunburnt Highway's retirement, with Fire Legend, Royal Emgrand, Stanley Road and Cumbria Dreaming to do battle at Wentworth Park.

Royal Emgrand notched his 13th Wentworth Park win on July 13, beginning cleanly and leading quickly before winning in 29.95, outstanding 520m time for a veteran.

Fire Legend (pictured) is defying his age of four years and three months, winning eight of his past nine starts, including his past five in succession, and has trialled brilliantly since winning over 450m at Grafton on July 13.

Trainer Mark Moroney said: "I trialled him over 411m at Casino earlier this week and he clocked 23.35.

"The track had just been turned over so was on the slow side but before Fire Legend went around, the track record holder Integrity Mate trialled in clocked 23.28.

"Integrity Mate proved the form by coming from last at the start to win the top grade Casino race over 484m on Thursday.''

Kerry Drynan has three of the eight finalists in Saturday night's NSW GBOTA Welcome Maiden including fastest heat winner Lady Divine, along with that greyhound's litter sister Reflection and their litter brother Copious.

In the July 13 heats Lady Divine led throughout in 30.24, beating Reflections by a length, while San Marco had just over two lengths to spare from Copious in 30.25.

Although Lady Divine defeated Reflections in the heats, Drynan said: "Reflections is definitely the quicker of the pair.

"But she has box five in the final and Lady Divine has box three so she has come up with the better draw.

"Copious has ability too but hasn't got as much early pace as his sisters, although he is quite strong at the finish.''

Provincial flyer Cashing Cheques, who has had five wins and four placings from nine starts on out-of-town tracks, makes his Wentworth Park debut in Saturday's Alice Daisy 21 Stakes, a 520m fifth grade.

Cashing Cheques had his first eight races on the roomy Maitland track but trainer Clive Miller has always been confident the dog would handle tighter circuits like Wentworth Park.

"About three weeks ago I took him to Wenty for a 520m trial and he clocked 30.28, which I thought was most satisfactory considering it was his first look at the track and his first run beyond 450m,'' Miller said.

"What really pleased me was how well Cashing Cheques handled Wentworth Park because he was scraping the inside rail all the way around.

"I have since given Cashing Cheques his first race on a tighter track and he went like a rocket over 400m at The Gardens on July 16, winning by nine lengths and clocking 22.65, best time of the meeting.''

Simply Limelight has been costly to favourite backers at Wentworth Park but should atone in Saturday's Happy Retirement Anne Stakes, a 520m fifth grade.

Simply Limelight, who has been plagued by unsuitably wide draws, has come up with box three and should win easily.

Since his come-from-behind win in a weak fifth grade on July 9 in 30.16, Simply Limelight has trialled in sensational fashion at Wentworth Park.
