Marvellous Maiden Trifecta For Kerry

By Jeff Collerson
She may not have trained a winning double but Kerry Drynan did better than that on Saturday night, taking out the Wentworth Park training honours by landing the trifecta in the NSW GBOTA Maiden Final with a trio of siblings.

Drynan had three finalists in the NSW GBOTA Welcome Maiden and filled all three placings when Lady Divine led throughout to beat her litter brother, Copious by just over three lengths, with their sister Reflections two lengths back in third place.

The trifecta had special significance as Drynan not only owns her three placegetters but bred the trio from her unraced bitch Steal The Glory.

"Steal The Glory is a daughter of my mum Doreen's National Sprint Championship winner Chica Destacada but she wasn't interested in being a racer, she just would not chase,'' Drynan said.

"But because she was so well-bred Doreen and I decided to breed from her.

"Although she finished third tonight Reflections is actually the quickest in the litter and when she ranged up to Lady Divine near the home turn I thought she was going to run her down.

"But she checked off Lady Divine's heels and dropped out to finish third, with Copious, who is the slowest of the three but the strongest finisher, getting up to run second.''

Time honours on Saturday were with Simply Limelight, who was backed from $2.10 to $1.50 and won his 520m fifth grade by eight lengths in 29.81.

Simply Limelight was supported on the strength of a sensational 23.70 post-to-post hand-slip at Wentworth Park.

Saturday's Masters race was tipped to be a match between Fire Legend and Royal Emgrand and it went to script, with the hot favourite Fire Legend leading throughout to notch his 46th win at his 108th appearance.

But Royal Emgrand, who was beaten just under a length, bungled the start and after giving the winner a huge start on the back straight so looked unlucky to go down in a fast 29.90.

Mr Determine enhanced his impressive strike rate to seven wins from 10 starts when he led all the way to clock a slick 29.92 in a 520m fifth grade on Saturday.

After the race trainer Michelle Sultana said: "Mr Determine is not overly strong at the end of 520m but if he continues to begin cleanly he has a future.

"Early in his career he was a lid-pinger but one day in a race at Bathurst, the dog in an adjacent box played up a treat and Mr Determine came out last.

"After that it took a lot of box practice to get him jumping well again but thankfully he has nailed the start in his past couple of races.''

Peter Mosman Opal minor placegetter Spring Elegance posted her second Wentworth Park win when she began brilliantly to lead all the way in 30.03 on Saturday in a 520m fifth grade.

But after the trainer Joshua Board's father Scott cautioned: "Spring Elegance goes up to fourth grade at WP from now on so this will be her big test.

"Some greyhounds step up to a rise in class but others don't make it.

"Box one helped Spring Elegance tonight and box positions will be a big factor for her now.''

Saturday's other fast winner was Jason Mackay's Zipping Maserati, who overcame a slow start from box one to win the top grade 520m event in 29.83.
