Arctic Set For Winning Debut In The Seniors

By Jeff Collerson
A near track record trial last Sunday has Arctic Kingdom looking poised to make a successful debut in Masters company at Wentworth Park on Saturday night.

Arctic Kingdom, who won at Wentworth Park from box one in a nippy 30.08 on March 12, will wear the red rug again in Saturday's final race, a 520m veterans' event.

"He turned four on April 4 but is going really well,'' trainer Owen Langley said.

"I took him to Lithgow last Sunday and he clocked 29.30 in a 506m trial, which should be good enough to make him hard to beat on Saturday.

"He is perfectly boxed and I expect him to lead all the way.''

While Lithgow is a non-TAB track, the course record stands at 29.06 and many top notchers have raced there and failed to match Arctic Kingdom's trial time at the western districts circuit.

Cawbourne Helm has been placed just once in three starts since leading all the way at Wentworth Park on February 12 but a return to box eight has trainer Ben Talbot upbeat about his bitch's chances in Saturday night's Ladbrokes Same Race Multi Stakes, a 520m fifth grade.

"When she won at Wentworth Park in February Cawbourne Helm came out running from box eight and handled the draw beautifully,'' Talbot said.

"She runs her best races from wide draws and just loves Wentworth Park.''

Super Aussie has a good record from box eight but trainer Brad Davis concedes his dog will have to begin fast if he is to win Saturday night's Where Else But Wenty Stakes, a 520m fifth grade.

Super Aussie jumped brilliantly to lead throughout from box three in a fifth grade at Wentworth Park in a handy 30.13 on April 1 before finding trouble at the first bend when unplaced in a far harder race at headquarters eight days later.

He drops back to moderate fifth grade company on Saturday but Davis said: "Super Aussie has had a win and three placings from five starts out of box eight but there is a bit of pace in this race so Super Aussie can't afford to make any mistakes at box rise.

"I think he will run reasonably straight when he comes out of the boxes so providing he steps away cleanly he has a good chance of being the pacemaker again.''

Best clash of the night looms in race two where Aston Barak, a brilliant all-the-way winner in a sizzling 29.74 at Wentworth Park on Wednesday tackles Casual Glance, a winner of 27 from 50 starts.

The Ladbroke It! Stakes is a 520m fifth grade and Aston Barak, who won a Free-For-All on Wednesday, plunges back into a fifth grade on Saturday.

As a winner of eight races at Wentworth Park Aston Barak looks extremely well graded, although Casual Glance, who has box eight, has a fine record from the extreme outside draw.

The Michelle Lill-trained Casual Glance has won five of his eight races wearing the pink rug but will need to nail the start if he is to topple Aston Barak.

While Aston Barak made full use of box eight at Wentworth Park on Wednesday, he has won two of his four races from box two, his Saturday draw, and should get room to move in the run to the first turn courtesy of Hyperventilate, box three, who gets wide.
