Mouse Ready To Be Red Hot Again

By Jeff Collerson
Red Hot Mouse did not begin with her usual dash when third, from box four, at Wentworth Park last Wednesday, and should only need to return to her customary "lid pinging" habits to win there on Wednesday night.

The Hank Vanderburg-trained bitch, who has won three of her four starts from box one, will wear the red rug in race 10, a 520m fourth and fifth grade.

She returned from a seven weeks' break last week and while she jumped reasonably well, she was unable to hold the lead with Fascinate Mel hitting the front going into the first turn and winning by three lengths.

"Red Hot Mouse trialled 30.15 on a track that wasn't fast at Wentworth Park before last week's race and I was quietly confident despite box four,'' Vanderburg said.

"But she didn't ping the lids like she can and the winner chopped her head off approaching the first corner.

"Red Hot Mouse is going well and if she jumps like she normally does she is capable of leading all the way this week.''

Another greyhound endowed with plenty of early pace is the Adam Wade-trained Lepidoptera, who has box five in race nine, a 520m fifth grade.

Lepidoptera enjoys a huge drop in class after beating all but the placegetters in a heat of the 520m New Sensation at Wentworth Park last Wednesday.

She had box eight and made the pace to the first turn before winding up eight lengths behind the winner, boom Victorian bitch Devine Empress, who clocked fastest time of the New Sensation heats with a 29.94 performance.

At her only previous Wentworth Park outing Lepidoptera had led early before finishing second to Charlie's Jar in a 520m fifth grade on March 23.

Lepidoptera's trainer Adam Wade said: "She is usually a fast beginner but in her two Wentworth Park races from boxes four and eight she just hasn't quite been able to get across to the rails.

"Box five is no help on Wednesday but if she pings the lids and can reach the fence without being hampered, she has a good chance.

"But Lepidoptera needs to lead comfortably because I believe 520m will be as far as she wants to go.''

Serengeti, trained at Scone by motor mechanic Bradley Wakem, is boxed to run a bold race in Wednesday's eighth event, a 520m fifth grade.

Serengeti made her Wentworth Park debut on Friday night in a heat of the Ultra Sense and showed great pace from box two to lead to the top of the straight.

She wound up fourth, beaten two lengths, and her trainer believes she can win this week.

"Serengeti trialled well at Wentworth Park before last week's race and I was actually a bit disappointed she didn't win,'' Wakem said.

"But I think they will have to run 30.10 or faster to beat her this time.

"She is ideally drawn in box one and this looks a winnable race for her.''

Ritza Rain has not raced since winning up the Richmond straight on November 20 but is going well enough to take out Wednesday's seventh race, a 520m fourth and fifth grade.

Trainer Victor Ellul said: "After her Richmond win Ritza Rain came in season so I gave her the full three months break.

"But she has been back in work for some time and is trialling well enough to win first up.

"Ritza Rain is jumping out of her skin at the moment and I like her wide box seven draw.''
