Start Will Be Crucial In Country Classic

By Jeff Collerson
"He just needs to come out,'' declared Melinda Finn, wife of leading trainer John Finn, after their outstanding dog Zipping Kyrgios drew box one in Saturday night's $125,000 to the winner STOCKMAN & Paddock Country Classic at Dubbo.

Zipping Kyrgios had box seven when runner-up to Chase Me Honey in the fastest of last Saturday night's semi-finals, with the winner covering the 605m in 34.57.

Second fastest time was shared by Victorians Aston Uylsses, trained by Paul Abela, and the Jason Thompson prepared Immunity, who each clocked 34.83.

Jason Mackay's Fantastic Raven won the other heat in 34.87.

Finn is the only trainer with two finalists, as Zipping Alabama qualified with a close second to Immunity.

"Zipping Alabama drew box eight in the final and she wants inside so she will find it hard to win from out there,'' Melinda Finn said.

"But Zipping Kyrgios has got an ideal draw so now all he has to do is use it, he just needs to come out.''

Chase Me Honey's trainer Michael Hardman is disappointed at drawing box seven despite his bitch possessing a good record from wide draws.

"I think box seven will make it hard for her against such a strong field but she is going great and is a good beginner so is in with a chance,'' Hardman said.

"I think Immunity will be the dog to beat because he was having his first run at Dubbo when he won his semi-final and I thought his win was most impressive.''

Aston Ulysses' trainer Paul Abela was unhappy at his dog drawing box six.

Aston Ulysses has drawn closer to the fence than box four just once in his past eight races and Abela lamented: "He never draws a decent box but at the same time he always seem to find a way to overcome his bad draw.

"It took me 11 hours to get from Bacchus Marsh to Dubbo for last week's semi-final and because Aston Ulysses has been on the road for four of the past five weeks I left the dog in NSW after his semi-final win.

"Hunter Valley trainer Darryl Thomas has been caring for him because it would have been asking too much of the dog to make the long round trip from Victoria to Dubbo again this week.''

Jarick Bale, who Chase home Aston Ulysses, is well drawn according to his Victorian trainer Mark Delbridge.

"His semi-final run from box three was super because the dog in box two veered wide and hampered Jarick Bale in the early stages,'' Delbridge said.

"Jarick Bale has box three in the final and I'm very happy with that draw.

"After this Saturday I plan to step Jarick Bale up in distance to see if he can stay.''

Delbridge heaped praise on the Dubbo track, commenting: "It's a good little country track, a lot better than many of the country courses in Victoria.

"There were plenty of people there last week and the atmosphere was great.''
