Wentworth Park Saturday Preview

By Jeff Collerson
Sam Sultana and his daughter Michelle have a second-to-none chance of training the winners of Saturday night's two group 1 finals at Wentworth Park.

Sam "Sparra" Sultana has Au Contraire in box three in the Ladbrokes Peter Mosman Opal while Michelle prepares the unbeaten sensation Rinsed The Lot, who has drawn four in the Ladbrokes Vic Peters Classic.

And just for good measure Sam also has Zipping Kimble in the Vic Peters with a chance, a race in which his older brother Vic Sultana puts the polish on fastest heat winner Foreign Capital.

In last week's heats Au Contraire led all the way from box one to win in 29.65 with the Barry Gibbons-trained Tulsi Banner beginning like a rocket to lead throughout in 29.59.

Au Contraire has won 11 of 32 starts with a further 12 placings for over $75,000 in prizemoney

But Au Contraire, with five wins and five seconds from 17 appearances at headquarters, is easily the most experienced WP performer of the finalists.

"I think she is well boxed because she 100 per cent had to draw near the rails to have a good chance,'' Sam Sultana said.

"Au Contraire will run straight from the boxes and I'm glad she has drawn inside Harmony Fire because that greyhound has box four and raced very wide through the pen in her heat.''

Au Contraire's kennelmate Zipping Kimble made the pace in his heat of the Vic Peters Classic and was caught in the last stride by Flash Boom Bang, who beat him by a half head in 29.52.

Sam Sultana said: "Zipping Kimble had box six in his heat but has his ideal draw, box eight, in the final, and I give him a good chance too.''

Blazing Raso was a $17 outsider when she made the pace before being run down in 29.82 by Out Of Style in her heat of the Peter Mosman but her bold showing was no fluke and trainer Blake Moroney is delighted with her box two draw in Saturday's final.

Blazing Raso had not seen WP for nearly three months before her Peter Mosman heat but she began brilliantly and posted fast early splits of 5.37 and 13.86.

"It's about time my box draw luck in finals changed for the better as my dog Jabeni had box eight in a Masters Meteor and he drew four in a Million Dollar Chase Consolation,'' Moroney said.

"I'm hoping Blazing Raso can repeat her heat run and she is boxed to be able to possie up on the fence at the first turn.''

Like Sam Sultana, Moroney is happy to see his bitch drawn inside the wide running Harmony Fire, box four.

Foreign Capital's all-the-way win in 29.37 was fastest of the Vic Peters heats but owner Gordon Sciberras concedes his dog will need to do everything right to win the final from box six.

"When I walked up to select the box, the rails was still there but as I usually do, I picked box six,'' Sciberras said.

"Vic Sultana, Foreign Capital's trainer, is not too worried because the dog has learned to handle wide draws, but from box six he can't afford to do anything wrong.

"Foreign Capital just needs to do what he did last week but no matter what, Rinsed The Lot is going to be awfully hard to beat.''

Part-owner Brad Canty was in awe of Rinsed The Lot's heat win, as the dog had a setback 10 days before that event and went into the race short of a run.

"Darrallene Thomas, the mother of Rinsed The Lot's trainer Michelle Sultana's partner Darryl Thomas, is a pretty good judge,'' Canty said.

"She looked after the litter by Barcia Bale from Mrs Mouse and from day one told me not to consider selling the blue brindle dog which now races as Rinsed The Lot.

"Darrellene declared him the smartest youngster she had ever seen, and she has been in the game for several decades.''

The Vic Peters remains wide open with Ferness, an all the way 29.46 heat winner from box eight, nicely drawn in three and notoriously slow beginner Flash Boom Bang, who won his heat in 29.52, ideally positioned in box one.

His trainer Jack Smith said: "His only chance of winning is to follow the pacemakers along the rails and keep getting room to move.''

But Smith, a big race specialist trainer, also gives Lorraine Jacky a chance in the Peter Mosman Opal, despite her awkward box five draw.

"Lorraine Jacky is going great and she got checked at the start when second to Tulsi Banner in the fastest 29.59 heat,'' Smith said.

"If she finds the fence and gets a clear run Lorraine Jacky has a great hope.''
