A Night Of Fast Times At Wenty

By Jeff Collerson
Bumpy's Lad had been unplaced in two Wentworth Park races before his slick 29.74 all-the-way win on Saturday night but trainer Nathan Goodwin expected a big run following the dog's win in a clearance trial there last Friday week.

"A friend needed a dog to complete a stewards' clearance for him so I put Bumpy's Lad in the trial and he clocked 29.94,'' Goodwin said.

"That encouraged me to think he had a good chance tonight but I was especially pleased when I discovered that although he had box five, box four was vacant.

"I thought that extra room would help Bumpy's Lad find his feet early and in a month's time I think this bloke is going to be a serious animal.

"His litter sister and kennelmate She's A Bumpy won in 29.99 at Wentworth Park last month and was beaten a length-and-a-half in 29.56 tonight but while she has always shown that talent, Bumpy's Lad has been slower to develop, he has always been a bit of a boofhead to be honest.''

After being placed in two of four Wentworth Park races Supreme Osti broke through in style with a last-to-first 29.83 win on Saturday night.

Although it was the first time the dog had broken 30sec at Wentworth Park, trainer Ashley Dwyer predicted after the race: "If he ever nails the start here Supreme Osti will run 29.50.

"He is a very good but has been slow to mature.

"Supreme Osti found trouble in a couple of his previous Wenty races so I took him away and raced him on big tracks at Temora and Bulli over the past month to build his confidence and have him race-ready for a return to this circuit.''

Freydis, named after one of the characters in the hit TV series Vikings, relished a drop in class to score her second Wentworth Park success on Saturday night.

Luke Azzopardi, whose son Peter trains Freydis, said: "Although she had been unplaced in tougher races at her previous five starts I gave her a good chance in tonight's race.

"When she finished fifth over 622m at Richmond on May 15 she was only one-and-a-half lengths behind the winner Ritza Smoke, and that dog has won seven races at Wentworth Park.''

Trainer Tess Simmons had a big night on Saturday, landing a winning double with Zipping Hedwig in 30.33 and Player One in 30.08, with the latter greyhound running down her kenelmate My Baroque Love to give their trainer the quinella in race three.

Saturday's fastest time was posted by the Barry Gibbons-trained Boston Banner, who ran down his litter sister Sergis Banner to score in 29.50.

Sergis Banner had set the stage for a quick 520m time with dazzling early splits of 5.37 and 13.71.

Nangar Larry took his earnings to $182,000 when he notched his 10th Wentworth Park win, while his time of 29.56 was matched by Kangaroo Jack who edged out She's A Bumpy.

Trunkey Chief completed a night of fast times with a 29.60 victory in the final event.
