A Good Legacy Continues

"It's an amazing breeding line, I just wish I had been able to tap into it 20 years earlier,'' declared trainer Frank Hurst after his greyhounds Good Odds Atlas and Good Odds Cobber had each broken 30sec in winning at Wentworth Park on Friday night.

Good Odds Atlas led throughout to win by seven lengths in a best of the night 29.64, while his litter brother Good Odds Cobber led from the catching pen for a two lengths' victory in 29.93.

Hurst's pair are sons of Good Odds Meghan, a litter sister to the Londonderry trainer's Million Dollar Chase winner Good Odds Harada and to Jack Smith's champion Feral Franky.

A few hours earlier the CHRIS O'Brien-trained QuanTifiable, another member of the same dam line, had taken out the $40,000 to the winner Goulburn Cup.

QuanTifiable is a daughter of Banjo Tifia, whose grand-dam Tifi produced Solar Pak, the mother of Good Odds Harada, Feral Franky and Good Odds Meghan.

Solar Pak is also the dam of Nino De Oro, who produced Good Odds Cash for Frank Hurst and his wife Tracey.

Good Odds Cash, who won 28 races including last year's National Sprint Championship, Richmond Oaks and Maitland Gold Cup for earnings of $390,000, is due to whelp her first litter, to Barcia Bale, in November.

Understandably the Hursts are excited about Good Odds Cash's prospects as a brood bitch, with Tracey pointing out: "Good Odds Meghan was a handy race bitch but she wasn't in the same class as Good Odds Cash.''

Punters who plunged on Leg Speed in Friday night's fourth and fifth grade race should discard the dog's second placing defeat behind Sweet City Gal.

While the dogs were parading to the starting boxes, a fireworks display set to commence at 8.30 began five minutes early, precisely as the greyhounds were being taken to the start.

Leg Speed, who had box one and was leading the parade, looked particularly anxious, and although the dogs were returned to the kennel area and subjected to a second "stir up" the noise could have contributed to the hot favourite's dreadful getaway.

While Leg Speed completely bungled the start, the winner, Craig Chappelow's Sweet City Gal, came out running.

Chappelow said later: "The firework noise obviously didn't faze my bitch but that's not surprising as all dogs react differently to that sort of situation.

"Sweet City Gal went better than ever because she not only began like a rocket from box five, but she worked her way across to the rails instead of her usual habit of veering hard left and putting herself out of business.''
