A Fresh Mia Heads Back To Town

By Jeff Collerson
Mia She's Fast is back at Wentworth Park on Saturday night for the first time in six weeks and trainer Frank Hurst believes the time away from the track has done his bitch "the world of good."

Mia She's Fast, who is raced by Wayne Franklin, has box three in race four, a 520m fifth grade, and Hurst is relieved to see her having a break from top grade competition.

"She has been racing against top notchers for most of her career, they haven't missed her,'' Hurst said.

"So after she finished fourth at Wenty on April 8 I decided to give her three weeks off.

"I put her out in the paddock but she went crazy, running up and down all day, so I was forced to bring her back into the race kennels to calm her down.

"She won a heat over 400m at Bulli In her comeback race on May 9 and in the final she was only third or fourth away but was three lengths in front at the first turn.

"Mia She's Fast is no superstar but she is a very honest little bitch and is well suited being back in fifth grade on Saturday.''

Modern Swinger's box manners have been a concern for trainer CHRIS O'Brien and he is hoping box one will bring the dog out better in Saturday night's third event, a 520m fourth and fifth grade.

Modern Swinger, who has had six wins and two seconds from 10 Wentworth Park appearances, dwelt at the start in his slick 29.80 and 29.77 wins from boxes four and three before again missing the kick when second to French Martini from box four on May 10.

"He hasn't been beginning like he can but box one might draw him out,'' O'Brien said.

"Modern Swinger is still learning because he gets off the track a bit as he goes through the first turn at Wentworth Park, I think he is hitting the corner too fast.''

Trainer Owen Langley would prefer Black Wizard drawn near the rails but gives his consistent sprinter a good chance in Saturday night's 11th race, a 520m fifth grade.

Black Wizard missed the start and came from second early in a three dog field to win a 520m stewards' trial in a tidy 30.03 last Saturday night at Wentworth Park.

"He ran home in 11.71 last Saturday which I was very happy with but I can't work out why he missed the start,'' Langley said.

"Before last Saturday's run I had given him a couple of trials at Wentworth Park and he was jumping well and clocking 5.45 and 5.50 first splits.''

Loose Zeus ran a great second to long odds-on favourite Chance Model at Wentworth Park on Wednesday night and should open his city account in Saturday nights ninth race, a 520m fifth grade.

In finishing second on Wednesday Loose Zeus clocked 30.01 and with a personal best Wentworth Park time of 29.78 he is the only starter in his race to have got under the 30sec mark.

Trainer Harry Sarkis said: "Backing up from Wednesday won't worry him because on Thursday morning he was raring to go again, I could hardly hold him.

"I have always had a big opinion of Loose Zeus and on Wednesday I thought he had Chance Model's measure on the back straight but he didn't seem to know how to get around him.''
