Vale - Joan Singline

By Jeff Collerson
Legendary breeder, owner and trainer Joan Singline passed away on Monday morning, aged 94.

Joan was the widow of George Singline, who died at the same age in January, 2018.

The Singlines' legacy in the sport will live on through their daughters, Lorraine Atchison, Carole Eaton and Noelene Holloway, all highly successful trainers in NSW.

Joan and George Singline won respect throughout the industry as the proprietors of a renowned breaking-in and trialling establishment at North Wyong but began their successful career as trainers when their first dog, Red Wool, won the 1959 Hunter Valley Championship.

Their best greyhound was Foot Mark, a champion stayer of the early 1960s, and through the earnings of that dog the Singlines were able to build their first house at North Wyong.

While Foot Mark was their best greyhound George and Joan made history in 1979 when they won the group 1 Vic Peters Classic final at Harold Park with a maiden named Scott Of Minmi.

Scott Of Minmi made his race debut in a non-betting qualifying heat and won his way through to the semi-finals where he was a runner-up.

That placing put Scott Of Minmi into the 1979 final, which he won, at only his second appearance in an official race.

One of Singlines' favourite greyhounds was Canadian Magic, who had 100 starts at Wentworth Park, registering six wins and a string of placings.

Until fairly recently it was a tradition in the Singline family for Joan to serve a Sunday baked lunch for whoever happened to turn up, a roll-up which often numbered 20 or more guests.

GRNSW wishes to extend its sincere condolences to Joan Singline's extended family and army of friends on the passing of a true legend in our sport.
