Perfect Two From Two For Jay

By Jeff Collerson
Jay Opetaia not only landed his first winning double at Wentworth Park on Saturday night but did it with Agland Luai and Street Of Dreams - the only greyhounds he trains.

The 19-year-old from ORANGE won in 30.07 with Street Of Dreams and 40 minutes later Agland Luai recorded a flying 29.63, fastest time of the night, when he ran down tearaway leader Wyndra All Class in the top grade 520m race.

Wyndra All Class reproduced her best Wentworth Park time of 29.67 but it wasn't good enough to hold out Agland Luai, who sat in second place four lengths behind the leader on the back straight.

Street Of Dreams had been placed once in three previous Wentworth Park starts but his powerful finish to come from third at the top of the straight to win didn't surprise Opetaia.

"He has been trialling well and is very strong so I wasn't surprised when he charged between the leaders to hit the front near the finish line,'' Opetaia said.

"Street Of Dreams is a big dog, over 35kg, and can be a bit clumsy, but he can run.''

Second fastest time of the night was posted by the CHRIS O'Brien-trained Modern Swinger, who led throughout from box six to take out the 520m Maiden Final in 29.75.

Modern Swinger had been heavily backed to win his heat in 30.17 after missing the jump, but nailed the start on Saturday and posted early smart splits of 5.46 and 13.73.

After the race trainer CHRIS O'Brien said: "I was confident Modern Swinger could break 30sec at Wenty but I must admit I was a bit surprised he went as quick as he did tonight.

"After he ran second to Canya Smoke Them at his first start at Wentworth Park last September he had a sore wrist so has only just come back to racing.''

Fascinate Mel upset favourites Showman Jack and Spring Patriot when she led throughout in Saturday night's third and fourth grade, notching her eighth Wentworth Park win in a nippy 29.94.

Trainer Noelene Holloway revealed after the race that Fascinate Mel had not been off the lead since her previous race at Wentworth Park in February 1.

"She has not had a trial of any description, she has just run around the yard at home'' Holloway said.

"I just open her kennel door in the morning and Fascinate Mel does her thing, she runs around if she feels like it, otherwise she takes it easy.''

Trainer Alan Proctor was surprised at how well his dog Jai Cool Guy went in running down odds-on favourite and pacemaker Lochinvar Kewell in 30.18 on Saturday.

Jai Cool Guy had been placed in two of his three WP races but had won just once in 16 outings, scoring over 320m at Richmond in December.

"He just keeps improving,'' Proctor said.

"When Jai Cool Guy finished third to Metal Torc at Wentworth Park last Wednesday it was his best run but he went even better tonight.

"He was pushing up along the rails on the back straight but couldn't get through so he surprised me how well he got to the line.

"Jai Cool Guy is raced by his breeder Michael Jones, and Sheez My Chicki, the dam of this dog, has been a fantastic brood bitch.''

Sheez My Chicki's offspring include French Martini, Ice Cream Story, Teddy The Bear, Lock Master and Carved In Stone.
