Terry Has Another Smart One

Former rugby league test star Terry Hill, who owned 2000 National Sprint Championship winner Placard and Fast Times, who smashed the Lismore 420m record in 2016, has another talented greyhound with Came And Went, who on Friday night scored one of the easiest wins seen at Wentworth Park.

Trained for Hill by Jodie Lord, Came And Went, who has won 22 races in South Australia, not only won Friday's 520m fifth grade by just under 14 lengths but stopped the clock in a sensational 29.55.

Came And Went, who had been unlucky when fifth in each of two previous Wentworth Park appearances, made full use of box one, jumping in front and racing further ahead with every bound.

After the race the dog's handler Paul Mills said: "He is a real get out and go dog and once he got on the lure like that was always going to be hard to beat.''

Came And Went's kennelmate Cawbourne Magic continued on his winning way in Friday's top grade 720m event, but not before giving those who had snapped up the long odds-on price offered a huge scare.

Cawbourne Magic surprised by jumping in front from box one, but was outpaced by kennelmate Silver Luck who cut across to the rails from box eight and skittled the hot favourite on the first bend.

Silver Luck retained the lead ahead of Victoria's Mepunga Ruby until the home turn, but Cawbourne Magic proved himself a true star by recovering and charging down the outside to win by a head.

Trainer Lakis Michael returned to Wentworth Park for the first time in over three years to win Friday's opening race with Numb, who led throughout in 30.31.

"That was my first runner here since I raced her mother Sweet Nangar at Wenty in late 2019,'' Michael said on Friday.

"I was happy with Numb's win because she had not previously seen Wentworth Park, she had not trialled on the track and that is why she got so wide on the first turn.

"The late Roy Heath, a great trainer who was like a father to me, gave me my first greyhound, Sparkling Kate, around 1990, and I have been involved with them ever since.''

Trainer Joe Comito had to scratch his group 3 Christmas Gift winner Hold Me Up from Friday's Wentworth Park meeting but collected a consolation prize when that greyhound's litter sister Funky Girl narrowly won a 520m fifth grade in 30.13.

"Hold Me Up had a sore toe so couldn't start but the injury is only minor, nothing serious,'' Comito said.

"I was surprised to see Funky Girl come from behind to win, because she usually needs to be out in front to be successful.''

Garry Edwards had no intention of nominating Zulu Zephyr for WP on Friday night until his pal, fellow trainer Steve Fitch, pointed out there was a race scheduled for dogs with one to three wins.

"Steve suggested I put Zulu Zephyr in that race and come to Wenty with him but at first I said I didn't think my greyhound was good enough for Wentworth Park,'' Edwards said.

"But he talked me into coming and Zulu Zephyr got up to win in 30.54.

"It meant a lot to me because she is owned by my son Kory Edwards.''

Apart from Came And Went, the only greyhounds to break 30sec on Friday were the Noelene Holloway-trained Fascinate Mel, who led all the way in 29.97, and Ray Webster's Father Rick, who trailed pacemaker Angel Glow early before just holding off Lochinvar Lona to score in 29.99.
