Her Kids Would Be So Proud

By Jeff Collerson
Eight months ago she was having babies but on Saturday Angel Glow produced the stand out performance of the Wentworth Park meeting with a sizzling 29.75 fastest time of the night performance.

Angel Glow, trained by Jane and John Carruthers of Rapid Journey fame, set up a big early lead and wasn't headed, comfortably holding off a late finish by ZIPPING Alabama to win over 520m in 29.75.

That was far and away the quickest time on the 10-race card, a remarkable achievement considering Angel Glow was having her first race for more than 10 months.

After the race John Carruthers quipped: "Angel Glow's kids will be proud of her now.

"Her eight puppies, sired by Barcia Bale, are eight months old on Christmas Day.

"She had a clearance trial over 520m at Richmond on November 4 and clocked 29.66 but just before that she trialled 29.35 for us at Wentworth Park.

"Maybe those two runs flattened her because Angel Glow did not trial as well in a couple of subsequent hit-outs but she came good again tonight.

"Being in an early race was a bonus because she plays up in the kennels.''

Second fastest time on Saturday was the 29.95 posted by Palawa King, who has now won his past three Wentworth Park races over both 720m and 520m.

Palawa King trailed kennelmate Red Hot Frankie to the home bend before powering home to score by a half-length from the fast-finishing ZIPPING Demand.

After the race Palawa King's trainer Jack Smith said: "I am so happy to see this dog going so well for his owner Errol Hughes, who has had an awful 2022.

"Errol's place at FORBES has been flooded three times this year, twice in the past couple of months, so he deserved a change of luck.''

Next best figures on Saturday were by Richmond 401m record holder Zambora Ted, who won in his best Wentworth Park time of 29.98.

Zambora Ted began only fairly from box four but was able to outpace fast beginner Fascinate Mel and lead at the first turn before hanging on to win by just over a length.

"Before the race I was worried about whether he could get around Fascinate Mel because she is a wide runner who drew box two and Zambora Ted had four,'' trainer Jason Magri said.

"But even though he came out behind Fascinate Mel my dog showed terrific pace to clear her and be in front around the first turn.

"That was his best Wentworth Park performance and while I'm confident he will win another 520m race at Wenty, after that, when he goes up in grade, it is going to get tougher for him.''

Training honours on Saturday went to Blacktown hobby trainer Rodney O'Brien, who won with his Richmond Derby winner He's Grand in 30.09 and with On The Bus in 30.37.

On The Bus' win ended an exasperating Wentworth Park sequence of 21 appearances for seven placings when he led throughout to win by three lengths.

After the race O'Brien said: "On The Bus won 18 races after missing the jump but since he has been beginning better he has had no luck although I was pretty confident when he drew box one tonight.''
