Beethoven Music To Owners' Ears

By Jeff Collerson
Mr Beethoven, who was born in the lounge room of his owner-trainers Allan and Karen Woods, broke through for a well-earned first Wentworth Park win on Saturday night.

A winner of 16 races at the provincials, Mr Beethoven had been placed in three of 13 Wentworth Park outings before his runaway win on Saturday when he clocked 30.24 in a 520m fifth grade.

After beginning smartly from box eight, Mr Beethoven swept around the early leaders to hit the front going through the catching pen and kicking away to defeat Peter Mosman Opal placegetter Spring Elegance by nearly three lengths.

Karen Woods, who handled Mr Beethoven on Saturday, said: "When his mother Avondale Charm was due to whelp her litter to Fernando Bale in January, 2019, we brought her into the lounge room.

"So the pups, including Mr Beethoven, were all born in our house.''

The Woods breed, own and train a small team at Nabiac, between Forster and Taree, and rarely miss nominating for Wentworth Park meetings.

"With greyhounds to let out occasionally it takes four hours to reach Wenty but it's worth it and Mr Beethoven's win tonight shows that if you keep coming there's a good chance you will jag a race there eventually,'' Karen Woods said on Saturday.

"I wasn't confident about Mr Beethoven tonight because he has box eight.

"Early in his career he handled outside draws well but recently he has become more of a rails man.''

Banjo Tifia won 15 races but throughout her career on the track trainer CHRIS O'Brien was almost salivating at the prospect of her becoming a mother.

"She has always had a great temperament and is a beautiful big 30kg bitch,'' O'Brien said.

The Nowra breeder's judgment has been vindicated with Mortified, the first to race from Banjo Tifia's October, 2020 litter sired by Fernando Bale, leading throughout for a runaway WP debut win on Saturday night.

"I had given Mortified a box to box trial at Wenty and her initial splits were a very quick 5.37 and 13.78 so I expected her to win on Saturday,'' O'Brien said.

"Saturday's sections were not as good at 5.47 and 13.93 but I had given her a finish on after her trial and I think she was getting out in line with the lure during the race so she should get better.

"Her siblings Ultimate Hit have won two from four and Rectified one of two starts while two more from the litter, Quantifiable, who has been placed in each of two races, and the unraced Modern Swinger, will contest heats of the Ladbrokes Zoom Top Maiden at Goulburn on July 29."

Greyhounds with the intriguing "Fat Boy's" prefix continued on their winning way at LADBROKES GARDENS on Friday when Fat Boy's Lucky, trained by Mark Davidson for Stephen Butler, won over 515m in 29.83.

Butler raced Fat Boy's Lucky's dam Fat Boy's Baby, who won 10 races, including two at Wentworth Park.

"I bought her as a pup for $2500 from Jason Bateup, a chubby fellow who is a good mate and he owned Big Daddy Bee, winner of the 2017 group 1 National Derby when trained by Jack Smith,'' Butler said.

"Fat Boy's Baby produced just one pup from her first litter, but this second litter by Aston Dee Bee, which comprises Fat Boy's Dream, whose eight wins include one at WP and a fourth placing in the group 1 Ladbrokes Peter Mosman Opal, is going great.''

Other members of Butler's Fat Boy's Baby's Aston Dee Bee litter include Fat Boy's Flying and Fat Boy's Wants, who has each won four races, while Fat Boy's Lucky's win on Friday was his second success.
