Miss Granger Could Be Headed To Black Top

By Jeff Collerson
Trainer Allan Woods is toying with the idea of nominating his brilliant front-runner Miss Granger for the August 21 heats of the group 2 Black Top at LADBROKES GARDENS following his bitch's slick 400m win at Maitland on Monday.

Miss Granger recorded her sixth win in eight starts when she scampered over the Maitland short course in 22.31sec.

"Although most of Miss Granger's win have been in sprints, she did win over 515m at LADBROKES GARDENS on May 5,'' Woods said.

"After that she tore a pin muscle so when she came back, I conditioned her with racing over shorter distances.

"The Black Top has probably loomed up a couple of weeks too early for Miss Granger but I will have a think about it, although of course a group 2 race with a $40,000 to the winner final is sure to attract some fast dogs.''

Woods and his wife Karen bred Miss Granger from their brood bitch Wallan Baby after mating her to the under-rated sire Keybow.

"The whole litter has ability and Nev's Gift, who has won four from seven starts and who won at Wentworth Park last Saturday in 30.02, is Miss Granger's litter brother,'' Woods said.

"Another from Wallan Baby's first litter, Bow Baby, has won three races in Victoria while Karen and I have won four races with Happy Dash, another of the pups.

"Wallan Baby won just one of five races before being retired due to wrist problems, but her win was in 29.92 over 515m at The Gardens while she had trialled 25.30 for the Maitland 450m and 22.60 over 400m at The Gardens, so she was a high speed bitch.

"We were always going to breed from her and she has produced a second litter to Zipping Garth, which are now five months old.''

Woods, who raced his first greyhound in 2012, is a truck driver from Nabiac, near Taree, and relies on wife Karen to bring their dogs to the races.

Joe Baldacchino bred and sold stars like Jimmy Newob and Fabulous Penny from his bonny bitch Nosey Rozy so it was fitting that he should win a race at Goulburn on Tuesday with another of her offspring, Mascot Miss.

Mascot Miss scored her fourth win in 30 starts when she upset a strong field, coming from box four to defeat favourites Maldini and Wanda Maximoff in slick time over 440m.

"It's ironic because Mascot Miss drew box four but because of scratchings she wound up starting from the rails box, what are the odds about that happening,'' Baldacchino said.

"I trained her dam Nosey Rozy and she looked set to be a champion after she won nine of her first 15 races including wins at Wentworth Park in 30.07 and then 29.60.

"But she was always breaking down and eventually I pulled the pin and retired her.

"The first litter she whelped to Where's Pedro were disappointing but her second litter, to Cosmic Rumble, included Jimmy Newob, who won two group races, 22 from 48 starts, and $239,000 for Victorian trainer Kel Greenough.

"Mascot Miss is from her third and final litter, sired by Fabregas, but again I sold the best in the litter, Fabulous Penny, as a pup to Peter Baker, from whom I had originally purchased Nosey Rozy.

"Fabulous Penny, trained by Charlie Gatt, a close friend, has won 18 of 36 starts over both 280m and 520m at Wentworth Park, but I get a huge thrill every time she wins.

"After all I had once had hopes of her mother Nosey Rozy being a group race greyhound for me, but a torn hip support and a couple of dropped back muscles ended those dreams for me.''
