Can't Handle It set for 5th Win

By Jeff Collerson
CAN'T Handle It led until near the home bend when third at his Wentworth Parl debut last week but looks drawn to score his fifth win in 11 starts when he exits box one there in Wednesday's 520m Thanks Jeff Collerson Stakes.

Trained by Jorja-Louise Howard, Can't Handle It lost ground by running wide on the first turn last Wednesday but retained a clear lead until leaving the back straight, before being overhauled in the straight by Chair Man and Tudor Fisk, both strong finishishers.

Although Can't Handle It moved off the track on the first corner last week, his trainer is pleased to see him in box one for the first time in his career on Wednesday.

"The wet conditions didn't suit him and he seemed to slip as he went through the catching pen in last Wednesday's race,'' Howard said.

"He had been trialled three weeks in a row at WP and had gone extra well each time so I expect him to run well.

"After he finished sixth at on May 17 I gave him a short spell to work on his box manners as he had been tending to miss the jump.

"In his trials and when he won at Maitland on June 13 and again last week Can't Handle It got away cleanly so hopefully the box practice has paid off.''

Richmond Derby winner He's Grand returns to WP in Wednesday night's 520m Happy Birthday Russell Free-For-All and while he has box four, trainer Rodney O'Brien believes having an empty box on his dog's left boosts his chances.

"Since the Derby win on June 24 He's Grand has done everything right,'' O'Brien said.

"He beat a top class field at Dapto on June 30 and then clocked 30.05 in a clearance trial over 520m at WP last Wednesday.

"I love this dog, he is the sort of greyhound who, when you put him into the boxes, you can be sure he is going to have a go.''

In last week's clearance trial He's Grand led by four lengths but only defeated his kennelmate On The Bus by a half head, meaning that greyhound recorded his best WP time of 30.06.

On The Bus has box six in Wednesday's 520m Thanks Weike & Lawrence Stakes but O'Brien said: "He is not as reliable as He's Grand, he tends to miss the jump and then find trouble but he is going well at present.''

Wagga trainer Paul Strutt will be chasing his first WP winner in six years in the sport when Stagger Out Lee contests Wednesday's Thanks Grahame Stakes over 720m.

At her sole WP appearance Stagger Out Lee looked strange to the track when beaten just under a length by Romantic Flame over 720m on June 22.

Stagger Out Lee had box eight in that race and will wear the pink rug again on Wednesday.

"She had not raced or trialled at Wenty before her second to Romantic Flame so she should be improved and she is getting better all the time,'' Strutt said.

"My 24-year-old son Jack took her to WP last week and he will be making the trip with her again.

"Jack has just returned home after working for 12 months with successful Victorian trainer Correy Grenfell and is keen to do well in the sport.''

Wednesday's best bet should be We Don't Share, who was far from disgraced when fourth, beaten a length, in Gatlin's group 1 Ladbrokes Vic Peters Classic final at WP on Saturday night.

We Don't Share drops to fifth grade when he exits box three in Wednesday's Thanks Mark Merlino Stakes, 520m, and with slow beginner Runway Messi in box two should get a clear run to the first turn.

Best value on Wednesday could be What A Tease, who finished seventh from box seven at WP last week but who is desperate for an inside draw and will relish moving to box two in the Thanks Claire Stakes, 520m.
