A Good Win For Start Packing

By Jeff Collerson
Start Packing, bought for $20,000 after winning a 395m maiden race at Albion Park in October, broke through for her first Wentworth Park win with a slashing best time of the night performance on Saturday night.

Trained and part owned by Glen Goodwin, Start Packing exited box eight and post slick early splits of 5.45 and 13.79 before covering the 520m in 29.75, well inside her previous best Wenty figures of 30.03.

After the race Goodwin said: "She went well in a box-to-box trial at Wentworth Park on Tuesday and I thought if she got on the lure tonight she would be hard to run down.

"Like a lot of greyhounds, Start Packing is better when she is on the bunny.''

Michael Anderson, one of Start Packing's part-owners, said: "A few of us had contacted Glenn and indicated we would be prepared to throw in a couple of thousand each and buy a greyhound for $10,000 or $12,000.

"Glenn suggested we put in a bit extra apiece to pay a little more and that way we would have a better chance of getting a city winner.

"When you consider that people are currently paying $6000 for a labradoodle puppy forking out $20,000 for a promising greyhound seemed pretty good value.''

Start Packing's time on Saturday was just .01sec faster than the Marie Burton-trained Opinions, who scored his third win in 31 Wentworth Park appearances with an all-the-way seven lengths romp in a 520m fifth grade.

Not far behind Opinions was Sam Sultana's marvelously consistent Yuko Girl, who overcame an unsuitable box eight draw to run down Special Blend in 29.79.

Yuko Girl (pictured) usually makes the pace in her races and Saturday's win, her 12th in 23 outings, was especially "tough" and was one of her best performances, even though it was .09sec slower than her previous best Wenty time of 29.70.

It was a great trial for the up-coming Ladbrokes Richmond Oaks series which gets under way with heats on Friday night at Yuko Girl's home track.

Chasing Fernando notched his sixth Wentworth Park win on Saturday when he led throughout for owner-trainer Craig Watt in 29.93, while Majestic Legend took his record to 12 wins from 26 appearances with an all-the-way win in a 520m fifth grade in 29.98.

After the race trainer Mark Wilcox said: "I am really happy with Majestic Legend because that was only the dog's second start around a two turn track.

"I was always confident he would handle a two turn circuit like Wentworth Park but I gave him his first two dozen starts on one turn tracks like Bulli and Goulburn to get him fit and to build up his confidence.''

Grevell Creed's trainer Paul Steedman is already contemplating a middle distance career for his greyhound after a powerful win in 30.24 in a 520m fifth grade on Saturday.

A noted slow beginner, Grevell Creed railed into third place at the first turn but then ran into the back of the speedy Mount Victoria and was still a distant third on the back straight.

After charging into second position near the home turn, Grevell Creed virtually climbed all over the back of the pacemaker Federal Light, before storming home to win by nearly two lengths in 30.24.

"He is certainly a strong dog,'' trainer Steedman said of Grevell Creed after the race.

"I think he will be a good middle distance greyhound a bit further down the track.''
