Mel Now Set For Thunderbolt

By Jeff Collerson
Fascinate Mel pulled up well after her personal best winning romp at Wentworth Park on Saturday night and is raring to go in Tuesday night's first heat of The Thunderbolt at Gosford.

Fascinate Mel has box one in the 388m central coast sprint and while she is coming back in distance, her initial sectional times on Saturday of 5.37 and 13.79, both flying efforts, suggests she can lead all the way.

"She has won in smart time over 388m at Gosford so I'm hoping she can nail the start like she did at Wenty on Saturday,'' trainer Noelene Holloway.

"After Saturday's win the stewards asked me about her 29.85 time for the 520m when her previous best had been 30.11.

"I explained that this time she had got away well without being hampered and I had always been hopeful she would eventually break 30sec at Wentworth Park.

"I also have Fascinate Mel's litter brother Fascinate Trump in box one in heat two of The Thunderbolt but I was disappointed with his fourth at The Gardens on Friday.

"However there is nothing amiss with him and as he has also won in fast time over the Gosford sprint journey I am banking on him stepping up to the plate on Tuesday night.''

Holloway, whose biggest success was with Magic Spring in the 2016 group 1 National Derby at Wentworth Park, needs to keep winning races to finance for the upkeep of the prolific number of puppies she owns.

"Esther's Diva has eight puppies, who are three months old, sired by Fascinate Mel's sire Aussie Infrared,'' Holloway said.

"Fascinate Joan was mated to Zipping Garth and six months ago she whelped five puppies, while My Redeemer is the sire of my bitch Stella Marina's six offspring, who are five months of age.

"And to top all that off Funky Portelli, another of my bitches, is due to whelp a litter to Fernando Bale on Thursday.''

Holloway has come a long way since her sister Lorraine Atchison presented her with a tiny puppy, which raced as Fascinate Marina, as a gift in 2006.

Holloway took out a trainer's licence in 2008 and Fascinate Marina won 12 races and $48,000 after launching her career with a win at The Gardens in the same year.

Fascinate Marina then became the dam of Queen Marina, who won a NSW Distance Championship over 720m at Wentworth Park for Holloway.

"Little fish are sweet so Mellcat Big Boy won't be contesting the Richmond Derby" said trainer John Mellon after the dog recorded his fifth straight win - and his third in sizzling time at Wentworth Park - last Saturday night.

"A lot of people have suggested I take him to Richmond for the Derby heats on June 17 but he has been flying around Wenty so why take him anywhere else?'' Mellon declared.

"As long as he is going as well as he has been I will be bringing Mellcat Big Boy to Wentworth Park because while the Derby final is worth $40,000 to the winner, I've always been a believer in the Little fish are sweet philosophy.

"Mellcat Big Boy has adapted to Wentworth Park and when he flopped at his first two appearances there a year ago, he was inexperienced.

"Sure he had run a record over 440m at Goulburn on April 16, 2021, but going into his first Wentworth Park campaign he had only three trials and four race starts under his belt.''
