Marching Toward A New Sensation

By Jeff Collerson
March Legend earned a crack at the Group 2 $40,000 to the winner New Sensation at Wentworth Park after notching his fourth win in eight appearances at headquarters on Saturday night.

The Alan Proctor trained greyhound led throughout from box one to win a 520m fifth grade in his personal best Wentworth Park time of 29.87, which equalled the fastest figures of the night.

Heats of the New Sensation will be held at Wentworth Park on March 30 and Proctor said: "March Legend is the right age for it so that's the plan.

"Because he has now won four races at Wentworth Park he will be getting up in grade and while I was obviously happy with his overall time tonight, I was a fraction disappointed with his first split of 5.50.''

Fantastic Luna, who had no luck at her only two previous Wentworth Park outings, shared March Legend's time standard for Saturday's meeting with an all-the-way 29.87 fifth grade victory.

Hobby owner Laurie Vella brave outlay in paying $16,000 for a pair of 13 month old litter brothers midway through 2020 continued to pay off on Saturday with Crocodile Vella, one of the pups purchased, scoring his 13th win and his fourth at Wentworth Park.

Crocodile Vella is in sparkling form for trainer Darren Sultana and had won in 29.94 at Wentworth Park a week previous before winning easily in 29.95 on Saturday.

"I was very lucky because Crocodile Vella became easily the best in the litter so I picked the right pup,'' Laurie Vella said.

"I bought Crocodile Vella and another pup from the litter when they were on the verge of being broken in and it has turned out perfect that he loves Wentworth Park.

"It's his favourite track so that's a big bonus.''

Crocodile Vella's win on Saturday took his earnings to $52,000.

Sunburnt Highway notched his 50th win, and his 38th at Wentworth Park, when he led throughout in Saturday night's Masters event over 520m.

Since January 1 the Judith Richardson-trained marvel has now won six of his seven Wentworth Park starts, and after posting a slick 29.99 on Saturday took his prizemoney to $350,000.

Sunburnt Highway turns six in August but shows no sign of slowing down any time soon.

Fascinate Mel's consistency at Wentworth Park was rewarded when she broke through for her first city win on Saturday night, clocking 30.14 after beginning brilliantly and leading throughout in a 520m fifth grade.

Fascinate Mel had been placed at her two previous starts and the wide running daughter of Aussie Infrared and Fascinate Mary , just two years old this month, has now had 23 starts for eight wins and six placings.

Her owner-trainer Noelene Holloway is a big fan of former US president Donald Trump and named Fascinate Mel after Trump's wife Melania.

Holloway, who bred Fascinate Mel, has also won four races from nine starts with her WP winner's litter brother Fascinate Donald, who is trained on her behalf by Brad Davis.

The success of Fascinate Mel and Fascinate Donald give the lie to the theory that bitches must be lightly raced if they are to succeed at the stud.

Fascinate Mary, the dam of Fascinate Mel and Fascinate Donald, had 93 starts for Holloway and scored 22 wins and 31 placings.

A drop in grade and the rails draw helped the Owen Langley-trained Arctic Kingdom lead throughout in a 520m fifth grade on Saturday, clocking 30.08, close to his personal best figures of 29.90.

Before the race Langley said: "I think my dog lead for sure from box one but if the favourite Aston Barak is sitting on his hammer we might be in trouble.''

As it turned out Aston Barak, the odds on hotpot, was third to the back straight but never threatened the winner and missed a place.
