Guelph Can Atone At Wenty Tonight

By Jeff Collerson
Guelph shocked trainer Mark Gatt when she bungled the start completely at Wentworth Park on Saturday and he believes she gets her chance to make amends after drawing box one there on Wednesday night.

Guelph, who led throughout from box four in a fast 29.84 on April 20, is the only Wenty winner in race five, a fifth grade, to have broken 30sec for the 520m trip there.

"I was shocked when she came out so badly on Saturday because Guelph has never done that before, either in trials or in her three previous race starts,'' Gatt said.

"She tends to use a bit of the track but after she came out so badly on Saturday she did rail up around the first turn so she should handle box one and has pulled up really well.''

Wednesday's best bet looks to be Especially Rare, who has had a win and two seconds from five Wentworth Park outings and who is well boxed out wide in seven in the Handsome Prince @ Newhaven Stud Stakes, a 520m fifth grade.

None of Especially Rare's rivals can match the Tom Rees-trained bitch's Wenty record and although her personal best Wentworth Park figures of 30.09 were posted from box two, she races wide so is well positioned on Wednesday.

Especially Rare beat all but the placegetters in the fastest of Saturday night's heats of the group 3 Ladies Bracelet won by Ties That Bind and drops in class on Wednesday.

Also down sharply in grade on Wednesday is the Joe Comito-trained Hold Me Up, who will exit box one in race eight, a 520m Free-For-All.

Hold Me Up may have qualified for this Saturday night's TAB Million Dollar Chase had he not drawn box eight in his semi-final won by Irinka Riley last Friday.

Hold Me Up began well from box eight but tried desperately to reach the rails and was badly hampered all the way to the first turn.

He would up a distant sixth, with trainer Joe Comito lamenting later: "He came out great but just could not get across, he wants an inside alley.''

Hold Me Up has won two of his three appearances from box one and wore the red rug when he led throughout to defeat Sally's Reward, one of his main rivals on Wednesday, in a fast 29.87 at Wentworth Park on March 26.

Jodie Lord, who has three of the eight finalists in Saturday night's TAB Million Dollar Chase, should take out Wednesday's Ladbrokes Cash In Stakes, a 720m mixed stakes, as she trains Cawbourne Magic and Lucky Dice, the two most fancied runners.

Cawbourne Magic has box one and Lucky Dice box seven with Lord commenting: "There is nothing between them but while Cawbourne Magic has a great draw, Lucky Dice has been trialling a little faster than her kennelmate.

"They are both returning from a short break because with all the big races on recently there have been few opportunities for low grade long distance greyhounds.

"Cawbourne Magic and Lucky Dice are ready to go but Lucky Dice has improved a little since her last campaign at Wentworth Park, where her best 720m time was 42.47.''

Impress Dressel, another from the powerful Jodie Lord kennel, has been placed just once in four Wentworth Park outings but plunges in class in Wednesday night's sixth event, a 520m fourth and fifth grade.

Impress Dressel was sixth to Louis Rumble in a Million Dollar Chase heat at Wentworth Park on April 23 and was runner-up to final winner Devine Empress in a heat of the New Sensation at the same track on March 30.

"Even though he finished sixth to Louis Rumble at his last start I was satisfied with Impress Dressel's run because he showed good early pace and only dropped out when he was unable to reach the lead going into the first turn,'' Lord said.
