Sportsbet Joins With Broken Hill For Historic Race Meetings

By GRNSW
It was already set to be the biggest week in the Broken Hill Greyhound Club’s 48-year history, but it just became a little bigger following a sponsorship deal with corporate wagering giant Sportsbet.

Broken Hill will host their first TAB race meeting next Sunday with heats of the Broken Hill Cup the highlight of the card. The following week the club will again have TAB and Sky Racing coverage for their $10,000-to-the-winner Cup Final meeting.

Not only are Sportsbet sponsoring a new feature event, The Sportsbet Richest Outback Maiden,
over the 375m trip with heats next Saturday and the $5,500-to-the-winner final on April 10, but they have injected a further $10,000 of sponsorship into the Broken Hill Club.

Sportsbet will also donate $1,000 to Greyhounds As Pets NSW each time a dog wearing the Sportsbet 4 rug wins a race during the April 3 and April 10 race meetings.

Club President Regan Edgecumbe said the sponsorship boost from Sportsbet has added “so much positive energy” to what was already an incredible time for the club.

“This is a fantastic injection of funds for our club and our industry,” Edgecumbe said. “I feel that it is not only significant for our upcoming feature race meetings, but it is giving us so much positive energy for the future.

“It’s a real show of support for the Broken Hill Greyhound Club. I have only been here for 14 years, and the club started back in 1974, but this is the biggest buzz I have ever seen around the sport here in Broken Hill.”

Damian Ryan, Head of Industry Relations for Sportsbet, said his organisation was excited to be partnering with the Broken Hill club for their feature event.

"Sportsbet are delighted to be sponsoring the first ever Broken Hill greyhound meetings to be televised on Sky on April 3 and 10,” he said. “And we can't wait to create 'the richest maiden in the outback.’

“We're really excited to partner with Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW) and Broken Hill for what promises to be an exciting two weeks for the community.”

The $10,000 isn’t the only prize for the winner of the Broken Hill Cup this year, with GRNSW
announcing recently that the winner of the event will also receive a ticket to the semi-finals of the Million Dollar Chase to be run on April 29.

“I don’t think you can dangle a bigger carrot. I’m surprised they haven’t got Bugs Bunny nominated,” Edgecumbe said.

“We’re looking forward to seeing some top-class dogs go around our track. With GRNSW we have done a lot of work here at the track and we can’t wait to see how good our track is with these good dogs going around.

“It’s a bit like a poker game at the moment, everyone is keeping their cards close to their chest about whether they are coming and which dogs they are bringing.

“And the maiden race has captured the imagination too. We couldn’t get enough numbers for a maiden race on the weekend because people are saving them for The Sportsbet Richest Outback Maiden.”
