Zipping Sapporo Set To Go Ok at Wenty

By Jeff Collerson
Zipping Sapporo may not be quite as good as when she won last year's Group 1 National Futurity or when she posted a blistering 29.61 at Wentworth Park 14 months ago but she is going well enough to win at headquarters on Wednesday night.

Zipping Sapporo has box one in the Ladbroke It! Stakes, a 520m fifth grade, and has had 10 races at Wentworth Park since she last contested this class in town.

Trainer Jason Magri said: "She can't run 29.61 anymore but she is going ok and from box one, her favourite alley, I think she can still clock her 29.90 around Wenty.''

Magri is also upbeat about the prospects of Our Amelia, who has box five in race eight, another 520m fifth grade.

"This looks a winnable race for sure,'' Magri said.

"I was happy with Our Amelia's second placing behind Good Odds Emma in the fastest time of the night at Wentworth Park last Saturday.

"My bitch had box five and while Our Amelia got away smartly, Good Odds Emma got underneath her from box one in the run to the first turn and gave her a little check.

"Our Amelia stuck on well and while she was beaten six lengths into second place I thought she was a bit stiff.''

Northern Rivers bitch Kooringa Lucy makes her first appearance in veteran class when she contests Wednesday's Ladbrokes Easy Form Masters Stakes, 520m.

Sunburnt Highway, chasing his 39th Wentworth Park win at start number 106, will be all the rage, but Kooringa Lucy could test the champion.

Kooringa Lucy came from box four and recorded a flying 29.87 at WP in September, 2020 and boasts the remarkable record of 35 wins and 30 placings from 85 starts.

Trainer Mitch Northfield believes she is going "just about as good" now as when she posted her personal best WP figures 18 months ago.

Northfield said: "Kooringa Lucy has lot a bit of her early pace but she is still racing really well and is strong at the finish.

"But I don't know if she can beat Sunburnt Highway, because he is simply a marvelous greyhound.

"I have enormous respect for dogs like Sunburnt Highway who can back up week after week and keep winning but my bitch is well placed in box two and I expect her to run a good race.''

Kooringa Lucy has a great record from inside draws and has won 12 of her 18 appearances from boxes one and two.

Wednesday's card features five heats of the group 3 Ladbrokes Magic Maiden, with pre-post favourite for the April 9 final Simply Limelight coming up with box one in the fifth qualifying race.

The Peter Rodgers-trained Simply Limelight has been runner-up in each of two Wentworth Park appearances, and recorded "free for all" figures of 29.71 when beaten in the tightest of finishes behind Doonan on February 19.

Simply Limelight was unlucky to lose that race as he exited box seven and veered hard left at box rise, losing ground while clamouring to reach the rails.

Rodgers, who trained the inaugural Magic Maiden final winner Country Zulu in 2002, holds a strong hand this year as there are also good reports about Simply Limelight's unraced kennelmate Lightnin' Ethics.

Owned by leading trainer David Smith, Lightnin' Ethics, who has box seven in heat two, is a litter sister to Simply Limelight.
