Final Finalist Decided At Wagga Wagga

By Peter Davis
GRNSW’s rich Country Challenge series continues at Wagga Wagga on Friday and it’s a reduced line-up which seeks to fill the final qualifying position for the June 26 final at Wentworth Park.

The series decider carries $30,000 to-the-winner, with seven heats already decided at Casino, The Gardens, Dubbo, Gunnedah, Nowra, Bathurst and Taree.

Having won her past two starts at Wagga over Friday’s 525m trip, Temora-based Lady Luna is sure to come in for solid support.

The daughter of champion sire Barcia Bale has been widely travelled and has really come to terms with the Wagga track now.

On May 29, the blue bitch showed good burn to lead from box 7 and hold Tiggerlong Ginga at bay by 3½ lengths in 30.40 seconds. Seven days later, she was headed early on from box 3 but rallied (wide) in the run home to score in 30.46 secs.

Now back to a favoured wide alley (box 8), Lady Luna is positioned to snare win seven at start 19.

The speedy Run Fast Maximus (box five) will look to match Lady Luna early but she’s up sharply in trip on latest outings and is yet to win beyond 450m.

Should Lady Luna prevail, she will tackle the likes of Kooringa Lucy, Bones McCoy, Zipping Kyrgios, Casual Glance, On The Rocks, Zulu Warlord and Lollipop Liz in the series finale.

One race later on the 10-event card, $5000 is up for grabs in a 1-3 wins Grade Five Final (525m) and the trip certainly suits Got A Repair.

Though new to Wagga, he’s shown good ability at Bendigo (winning a maiden in 23.88 in April) and, from box 1, is drawn, to improve on latest Temora and Shepparton results.

The first race at Wagga gets underway at 7.05pm.
