Age Shall Not Weary Ebby

By Jeff Collerson
Ebby Infrared is set to get a last chance at gaining group race glory when he contests heats of the group 2 Maitland Gold Cup on Monday, March 14.

The $40,000 to the winner final will be held over 450m a week later.

Undefeated in two starts since becoming eligible to contest Masters’ races after turning four on February 22, Ebby Infrared won last year's listed race The Collerson at Wentworth Park but a group win has eluded him.

"Unfortunately he was at the very peak of his form when the 2020 Golden Easter Egg had to be cancelled due to Covid so he might have missed his chance,'' trainer Michael Eberand said.

"But his two wins in Masters races since he turned four have encouraged me to give him a last shot at a group race at Maitland.

"Ebby Infrared finished second to Mottza in the 2020 Maitland Cup final and he won the Cup Consolation last year when his uncle, Ebby Jet Power, won the final for me.

"Ebby Infrared, who has won 48 races and earned over $202,000, has also been placed in two Bulli Gold Cup finals.

"But the Maitland Cup has been a particularly good race for this family as Ebby Infrared's sire Aussie Infrared won the 2017 final.

"Ebby Infrared was a finalist in Simon Told Helen's group 1 Maturity at The Meadows and while I doubt that at his age he can win this year's big one, I am quietly confident he is capable of making the final.

"After the Maitland series I will l concentrate on Masters races with him.''

Meanwhile Lala Kiwi's win in the group 1 Australian Cup at The Meadows on February 26 has fuelled interest in her sire Aussie Infrared, who is at stud at Eberand's kennels.

"At night Aussie Infrared lives in our house and he potters around the back yard during the day,'' Eberand said.

"There has been a lot of interest in him recently and he has been mated with Wow's dam Miss All Class, Hightan, the mother of this year's National Futurity winner Idolize, and Fantastic Dotty, whose offspring include Razor Sharp, a winner of 15 from 26 for Victorian trainer Jason Thompson and Campini, who has won 22 of 57 starts for WA's Paul Stuart.''

Lala Kiwi, who notched her 20th win in 49 starts when she took out the $300,000 Australian Cup, is off to WA for the Perth Cup.

"But all being well Lala Kiwi will be back in Sydney for heats of the group 1 Golden Easter Egg at Wentworth Park on March 26,'' Tom Dailly, whose wife Andrea trains the greyhound, said.
