Nose Thwarts Wenty Double

By Jeff Collerson
Last Saturday night Kempsey trainer Nathan Goodwin was on the verge of landing his first Wentworth Park double in 26 years until Sunburnt Highway poked his nose in front to claim his 37th win at the track.

Goodwin had won race six with Angry Blizzard and almost snared his first brace of city winners when ZIPPING Brady charged home in race 10 but went under by a nose to Sunburnt Highway.

"ZIPPING Brady had plenty of races before I bought him for $6000 or $7000 and I reckon he has earned $30,000 since I got him,'' Goodwin said.

"He also won a Masters race at Albion Park on February 3 and I had something on him at $26 so he has been a wonderful buy.

"Angry Blizzard has now broken 30sec a couple of times from box one at Wenty and he is also eligible for Masters races next month.

"The competition will be strong but obviously I'll be setting Angry Blizzard and ZIPPING Brady for the Masters Meteor series which gets under way with heats at Wentworth Park on April 27.''

Goodwin trains the dogs bearing the "Angry" prefix for NSW country breeder Chris Witt, who also races Angry Firestorm, a winner on debut over 400m at LADBROKES GARDENS last month.

"Angry Firestorm is a quick dog while I previously trained Angry Tornado, Angry Hurricane and Angry Hail for him and currently also have another of his greyhounds, Angry Monsoon, who has won 11 races, in my kennels.

"Angry Hail was fastest of them all but was injury prone and won five of just 20 starts.

"Angry Lightning, the dam of these dogs, was pretty ordinary on the track and had a single win and no placings from nine races.

"But she has been a good brood bitch and her daughter Angry Hail who has retired, has whelped recently to ZIPPING Garth.''

A cut foot torpedoed plans for Ebby Infrared to tackle his third Ladbrokes Cyril Rowe Bulli Gold Cup.

Ebby Infrared finished third to Pindari Express in the 2020 final and was minor placegetter again in last year's final won by Barcia Blue Boy.

His trainer Michael Eberand said: "Ebby Infrared's third to Poppy Jack over 400m at Bulli last Tuesday convinced me he was ready to have another crack at the biggest race on that track.

"I was all set to nominate Ebby Infared for Sunday's heats when he cut his foot.

"Last Tuesday old Ebby Infrared, who is four years old, ran his best race in a long while because after missing the start he was hampered as he left the boxes and flashed home out wide.

"The extra 72m of the Cup heats would have been perfect.''

Ebby Infrared has earned $200,000 from 48 wins and 40 placings in 120 starts.
