Hoping Ebby Is Another Ripper

By Jeff Collerson
Ebby Miss was named champion brood bitch of 2017 at last Sunday's Greyhound of the Year function and now her owner and former trainer Michael Eberand is banking on her daughter Ebby Ripper following in her dam's footsteps.

"Ebby Ripper's first litter comprising eight puppies sired by Ritza Lenny, are 10 months old, while she has a second litter, three months of age, to Barcia Bale,'' Eberand said.

Ebby Miss earned her 2017 award after producing top notchers Barking Bad, Suffragette and Aussie Infrared, now one of Australia's leading sires.

Aussie Infrared is the sire of Ebby Infrared, who has had 44 wins and 37 placings from 112 starts for Eberand.

"Ebby Infrared, who will be eligible for masters races in February, has won over $191,000 but covid had a huge impact on his earnings,'' Eberand said.

"Between February and May last year Ebby Infrared won 11 of his 14 races, among them a Bulli defeat of Good Odds Harada, the previous year's Million Dollar Chase winner, and he was in such fantastic form he was almost unbeatable.

"I had been setting him for the $250,000 to the winner Golden Easter Egg at Wentworth Park but because of covid the race had to be cancelled.''

While a great producer, Ebby Miss won just four of 55 races and although a prolific finalist in major staying races, her daughter Ebby Ripper, with $318,000 from 32 wins and 52 placings out of 130 appearances, was far superior on the racetrack.

That makes it almost certain Eberand can anticipate plenty of winners in the coming years.

Coonamble, Australia's most famous non-TAB series of country race meetings, will return after a Covid enforced hiatus early next year.

The carnival will get under way on Wednesday, January 26, with twilight and night fixtures, followed by a twilight meeting the following day and then a succession of races on Friday, January 28 and Sunday, January 30.

As always the carnival's feature race will be the 305m Ned Australia Whisky series, with the $12,000 to the winner final on Sunday, January 30.

Other features are the $2000 to the winner Garrard's Horse & Hound Super Maiden over 400m, Tyati Coonamble Cup (530m) with $4000 to the winner and the Multicam CNC Routers Mixed Final over 530m with $3000 for first past the post.

Crowdza Dazzled broke down when a fading second to Vamos Penny in his semi-final and will miss Saturday night's GBOTA Ladbrokes Flight To The Phoenix final at Wentworth Park.

"I'm told he will recover completely but he will need around eight weeks rest,'' owner-trainer Stuart Hazlett said.

"When Crowdza Dazzled got run down after leading clearly in his semi-final I suspected something had gone amiss and a visit to my veterinary surgeon the following day confirmed my fears.''
