Tiger, From Good Thing Beaten To Good Thing

By Jeff Collerson
Tiger Jack won in a flying 29.62 and 29.78 at Wentworth Park before finishing second at his most recent start there but his performance when runner-up was perhaps the most remarkable.

Tiger Jack, who has box two in Wednesday night's Ladbrokes Easy Form Stakes, a 520m fifth grade, was a certainty beaten when beaten just under three lengths in 30.09 on February 12.

After being slowly away from box six, the JODIE Lord-trained 26 months old youngster was badly checked at the first turn.

Tiger Jack took off from sixth at the half-way mark and put himself in a winning position leaving the back straight, only to lose all chance when he was galloped on from behind and almost dragged down.

Amazingly Tiger Jack regained his balance and set off after the pacemakers, flashing home to beat all but Cawbourne Helm.

On Wednesday Tiger Jack, a good railer, has drawn near the rails for the first time at Wentworth Park as he won from boxes five and three before exiting box six last time out.

Tiger Jack has box two and while he has not raced from that draw he was successful at his only appearance from box one.

His obvious danger is the front-running speedster She's Savage, who has drawn box three after a succession of wide draws at Wentworth Park.

She's Savage was runner-up to Dapto Megastar winner Ritza Donna in a heat of the group 1 Ladbrokes National Futurity on January 14 before finishing fourth from box eight in Idolize's final.

She had no luck when third and fifth, from boxes six and seven, in two subsequent Wentworth Park outings before making full use of box two for a fastest time of the meeting win over 450m at Maitland on February 14.

Black Fox, who won five of eight short course provincial races before finishing second at her Wentworth Park debut last Wednesday, looks hard to beat in this week's ninth event, a 520m fifth grade.

Last Wednesday Black Fox began smartly from box seven but lost ground by veering sharply towards the rails and did well to finish a distant second to Spring Venom, who clocked a smart 29.98.

Chris Arletos, trainer of Black Fox, said: "My bitch had not seen Wentworth Park before last week's race and she had not been tested over 520m.

"So considering it was her first 520m run I was pleased with her performance.''

The Board family, from Spring Hill, near ORANGE, have been enjoying a run of wins at Wentworth Park this year and will have strong representation again at Wentworth Park on Wednesday.

Trainer Scott Board's nephew Jay Opetaia has last Wednesday's dazzling maiden winner Agland Luai in box seven in race three, Scott will rug up Spring Meteor who has box two in race six, while his son Joshua will be represented by Spring Venom (box eight, race seven).

"Since Agland Luai's all-the-way win in 30sec last week Jay has kept him fresh, just working him along at home,'' Scott Board said.

"Spring Meteor won a stewards' trial in 30.09 at Wentworth Park on February 12 because I needed him to compete with his kennelmate Spring GONZALES, to get that dog cleared to resume racing.

"Spring Meteor has been dwelling at the start but if he gets the jump right this week he is well boxed near the rails and has good early zip.

"He has clocked a third split of 17.93 at Wenty so possesses high mid race speed, he just needs to get a bit stronger at the end of 520m.

"Spring Venom won from box three at Wentworth Park last Wednesday but I don't think box eight will worry him at all this week, so long as he gets away cleanly.''

Spring Venom has not previously worn the pink rug but is unbeaten in two races from box seven.
