Lorraine Happy Nobody Called Now

Tarawi Ted and Tarawi Chrissy have not been out of a place in 10 starts yet owner-breeder Lorraine Atchison only retained them after being unable to sell the offspring of the third litter from her top race bitch Miss Foxy Lee.

On Saturday night at Dapto, the David Smith-trained Tarawi Ted led throughout in a fast 29.83, taking the 22 month old youngster's tally to two wins and three placings from five appearances.

Then his litter sister Tarawi Chrissy, trained for Atchison by Alan Proctor, overcame first turn bumping to beat all but Analysing in a sizzling 29.77.

That second placing took Tarawi Chrissy's record to three wins and two seconds from five outings.

"When I advertised them for sale for $4500 I did not get a single phone call,'' Atchison recalled.

"Miss Foxy Lee won 22 races but her first litter, by Barcia Bale, were disappointing and while her three pups from her next mating to Fernando Bale were better, there were no great shakes.

"When mated to Dyna Double One she produced a whopping litter of 11 which were really too many for me to keep, but I could not sell any of them.

"I reckon rearing these 11 puppies has taken five years off my life because I have never been one to do things by half measures.

"If I breed and rear a pup on my property I leave no stone unturned to make them good, I feel it is my responsibility to the young dogs to see they get to the track.

"To accommodate the Dyna Double One-Miss Foxy Lee litter I even had to build additional kennels and while it has been a long road seeing their offspring getting to the races, the success of the greyhounds David and Alan are training for me has made it worthwhile.''

Lorraine Atchison was born into greyhound racing with her parents, Joan and the late George Singline long term operators of a famous breaking-in establishment at North Wyong.

"Mum and dad got their first dog, Red Wool, in the late 1950s and he won the 1959 Hunter Valley Championship,'' she said in an interview for GRNSW's The Chaser magazine.

"Their best dog was Foot Mark, a 1960s long-distance dog who made them enough money to enable them to buy their house at North Wyong.

"My parents' biggest win was in the 1979 Vic Peters Classic, a group 1 event at Harold Park.

"They trained the dog for Frank Mahoney and his Classic win remains unique because when he contested his qualifying heat Scott Of Minmi was unraced.

"After finishing second in his semi-final Scott Of Minmi won the final at only his second start in a race, and while still a maiden!''

Atchison has also had great success as a trainer, with her bitch Tarawi Tess being runner-up to John Finn's Winsome Shot in the 2003 group 1 Paws Of Thunder at Wentworth Park.

Lorraine Atchison has never been one to "knock'' the sport she loves, declaring: "Greyhound racing has given me and my family a wonderful life.''

Greyhound racing's mighty midget Encouraging has done it again, scoring her 14th win on Saturday night at LADBROKES GARDENS.

When she was runner-up at her first start 12 months ago, Encouraging tipped the scales at a miniature 21.1kg but on Saturday she weighed in at 22.2kg, exactly the same as when she won at her previous LADBROKES GARDENS appearances.

"She has bulked up,'' quipped trainer Bryan Young after Saturday's win.

"I think the extra kilo is due to her muscling up with maturity, and also she had a seasonal spell which can add a little weight to a bitch.

"Then again, maybe her heart has just got bigger.''
