Wenty Win No Fluke For Barbs

By Jeff Collerson
Go Forward Barbs not only produced a surprising $13 win at Wentworth Park on Saturday night but she proved the effort was no fluke by covering the 520m in 29.85, fastest time of the meeting.

Go Forward Barbs' best time in two previous unplaced runs at Wentworth Park had been 30.73 and trainer Adam Campton conceded he was surprised at her quick time on Saturday.

"I have given her a couple of post-to-post hand-slips since she last raced at Wentworth Park and she clocked 24.60 and 24.50.

"Those are handy times but these days are nothing flash, although in two wins and a third over 400m at Richmond before tonight's race her run home figures have been very good.

"Those run home times indicated she could go well over 520m and when she jumped in front and got on the lure tonight Go Forward Barbs showed what she could do.''

Wenty newcomer Where's Rocky recorded second fastest time on Saturday night, clocking 29.87 after dwelling at the start but railing through to lead at the first turn.

"Before tonight Where's Rocky had four starts at Bulli for two wins and two seconds but before he commenced racing he did trial 29.95 at Wentworth Park,'' trainer Ray Magri said.

"Where's Rocky will be a nice dog, he just has to learn to jump better, but he is a very calm greyhound so has the right temperament.

"I'm not surprised he went to the line strongly at the end of 520m before he is closely related to the former champion stayer Sweet It Is.''

Sunburnt Highway's winning streak at Wentworth Park came to an end on Saturday night when Queenslander Boscono took the lead going through the catching pen to win easily in 30.17.

Sunburnt Highway had jumped in front from box three but veered hard left and collided, allowing the winner to secure a lovely run down the outside of the field.

"Boscono won at Wentworth Park last week without having seen the track and all courses come alike to her,'' trainer Robert Ayres said.

"She won first up at Bundaberg on April 26 and had not seen Casino before she won there on May 20.''

Trainer Simon Rhodes has been in despair over Veridis Bale continuing to draw wide at Wentworth Park but his greyhound was able to overcome box six to score his first city win on Saturday.

Veridis Bale began only fairly but surged into second spot at the first turn and took the lead on the back straight to win in 30.24.

"He had boxes six, seven and eight in three previous Wentworth Park races and I have been sweating on him drawing an inside alley,'' Rhodes said.

"He has not been jumping well either and while he did not begin that well tonight, he drove up hard to be second at the first turn.

"In his previous Wenty races he has driven up well like that but has been 'taken out' at the first turn, and tonight they left him alone.''

The under-rated Diamantina Rose notched her ninth Wentworth Park win when she scored an upset victory in Saturday's Free-For-All.

Trained by Christine Proctor, Diamantina Rose has shown a liking in the past for box eight and she made full use of her outside draw on Saturday, sweeping down the outside to lead all the way in 30.06.
