Crocodile Set To Rock Bathurst

By Peter Davis
Talented juvenile Crocodile Vella steps up from maiden company at Bathurst tonight and is drawn to make a successful debut at Kennerson Park.

The son of champion sire Fernando Bale posted very quick sectionals in a smart 22.66 win at Richmond on March 17 when able to rail to lead after 75m – making full use of the inside alley.

While venturing from Richmond for the first time, Crocodile Vella is drawn to advantage in box two and has more upside than many of his rivals. Consistent placegetter Dana Ruby (box four) also arrives at the track for the first time.

The Cowra-trained youngster has not missed a place in five starts since winning over 350m at Goulburn in a smart 19.72 and looms as Crocodile Vella’s main threat.

Monday’s meeting is the final race day for the month and Llandilo-based trainer Ricky Brewer will head west with a six-strong team.

In March, Brewer has prepared nine winners from only 19 runners at Bathurst. His kennel star Fernando Alonso has been unbeaten in four starts at Bathurst for the month but will not return to attempt win five.

Brewer’s Lexus Herrera (Race one) is the pre-post favourite and looks particularly hard to beat while Start The Clock (box two) and Urana Dream (eight) clash in race four. Later, kennelmates Fernando’s Charm, Snipes and Quirky Cassie do battle in Race 11.

Three wins for the night would be a remarkable result and cap a significant month for the emerging 26 year-old mentor.
