Kurios Motion Earns a Crack At The Richmond Oaks

By Jeff Collerson
Kurios Motion, once regarded as not having a bright future on the racetrack, notched her sixth Wentworth Park win and produced her personal best figures to record the fastest time of the night on Saturday.

Kurios Motion, whose previous best for the 520m was 29.84, trailed pacemaker Aston Zodiac to the home turn before coming away in the straight to win comfortably in 29.81.

In doing so Kurios Motion earned a crack at the heats of the Group 2 Richmond Oaks on February 26.

"She has won and had several races over 400m at Richmond but has not started over the Oaks distance of 535m there,'' trainer Kerry Drynan said on Saturday.

"When I was running Kurios Motion in 400m races I did not believe she was going to turn out as good as she has and she has continued to improve.

"Not long ago she tended to step to the right in the early stages but she is tracking much better now and is handling the start more capably, staying very still in the boxes and getting down nicely.''

Fire On Ice, who led throughout on Saturday in 29.92, and National Futurity winner Zipping Sapporo, who was not headed in her 29.98 success, will also tackle the Richmond Oaks series.

Trainer Mark Moroney said: "Fire On Ice seems to have lost a bit of her early speed but has compensated by being stronger at the finish.

"The hard Richmond 535m suits her and she finished fourth to Sniffy in the Richmond Oaks final last year.''

The Luke Adams trained Zipping Sapporo, who was having her first start since winning the group 1 Futurity at Wentworth Park on January 23, will probably not race again until the Oaks heats at Richmond in a fortnight's time.

Training honours on Saturday were with Chris Carl, who took out the opening event with Weblec Pearl, who led throughout in 30.02, and won a 520m fifth grade in 30.22 with Outside World.

"Victorian trainer Jeff Britton sent Weblec Pearl to me for the Futurity series early last month and I have been waiting for him to ask me to send her home,'' Carl said on Saturday.

"But now she has won a Golden Easter Egg Prelude he might be inclined to leave her in Sydney until that series.

"Weblec Pearl is a good beginner but doesn't handle the first turn at Wenty all that well.

"I was surprised to see Outside World come from a distant third on the back straight to win because she goes quick in the middle stages but usually dies on her run in the straight.

"She is a bad beginner but what helped her after her customary slow start tonight was that she ran straight from box eight to the first turn.

"Outside World usually runs wide when she draws inside and veers left when she draws outside.''

There wasn't a more impressive winner at Wentworth Park on Saturday than Queenslander It's A Rush, who overcame a slow start at her Sydney debut to take the lead at the half way mark before winning a 520m Egg Prelude by over eight lengths.

It's A Rush sped over the 520m in 29.88 and came home in a fast 11.73.

A change in training routine has improved Saturday's 720m winner Temper Tears, who followed a good second to Cawborne Footrot in 42.28 at Wentworth Park on February 6 with a determined 42.48 win on Saturday.

Trainer Mick Hardman said later: "When I first got Temper Tears I was working him hard and training him like a stayer.

"Then one week I didn't do a lot with him and ran an improved race, so now I've eased up on him as far the work goes and he is going much better.''
