Wow! Karina's Couple Fly at Wenty

By Jeff Collerson
"Wow indeed'' exclaimed course broadcaster Tim Newbold and that just about summed up the reaction of Wentworth Park fans after Karina Britton's Goulburn Cup winner Wow posted a sensational 29.48 winning a 520m fourth grade on Saturday night.

Princess Riot led to the first turn and carved out a smart 5.41 first split, but Wow swept around her going through the pen and despite racing wide, came away to score by three lengths.

"It's tough when you clock 29.68 and get beaten,'' lamented Princess Riot's owner Jimmy Vescos after Wow's exemplary performance, which comprised second and third splits of 13.69 and 17.74.

Less than an hour later kennelmate Ad Astra, who has long been considered the equal of Wow, his more illustrious sibling, made a stunning Wentworth Park debut to lead throughout in a 520m fifth grade, stopping the clock at a slick 29.78.

Also landing a double on Saturday night was in-form Londonderry trainer Justin King, who won a 720m event with Hampshire in a smart 42.37 before taking out a fourth and fifth grade 520m event with Wyndsor Rose in 30.01.

Wyndsor Rose had won in 29.92 at Wentworth Park on Wednesday but King ranked Saturday's performance as good, if not better.

"She had to work hard to come from behind pacemaker Burst The Seam to win tonight and she and that dog did bump each other at one stage,'' King said.

"Hampshire benefited from a good getaway and through getting a clear run from box one.

"When she trailed the leader Go Abbey Sue in the early stages, it helped my bitch when that greyhound stayed a couple off the rails and gave Hampshire plenty of room on the fence.''

Vicki's Queen took her Wentworth Park record to a remarkable five wins from six starts with a tenacious come-from-behind performance to take out Saturday's opening event in 29.84.

Vicki's Queen jumped in front from box four and posted a quick first split of 5.43 but was headed by Kurios Motion leaving the back straight.

After trailing that greyhound around the home bend, Vicki's Queen finished best out wide to win by a neck.

"She has great early pace but tends to have a flat spot in the middle stages,'' Vicki's Queen's trainer Peter Lagogiane said later.

"But she has strength at the finish and ran home in 11.75 so I'm not complaining.

"The only thing that concerned me tonight was that Vicki's Queen got very wide, more so than usual, so I will have to look at that.''

Hundred Degrees, whose previous best Wentworth Park time had been 29.90, slashed those figures to 29.80 with a powerful win in a 520m fifth grade.

"I reckon Hundred Degrees is capable of going even quicker because he is improving all the time,'' trainer Sid Swain said.

"But I will have to nurse him along as I think he could develop into a good stayer because this dog is so clean-winded.''

Owner Tanya Eberand holds "bragging rights'' over her trainer husband Michael after Ebby Jet Power  notched his ninth win in 19 Wentworth Park outings in Saturday's Free-For-All.

Ebby Jet Power led throughout in 29.82 and after the race Tanya Eberand said: "Michael has always considered our other dog Ebby Infrared superior but Ebby Jet Power has always been my favourite.''

Ebby Infrared, who finished fourth in Thursday night's group 1 Sportsbet Dapto Megastar, has won 28 races and $106,000 prizemoney while Ebby Jet Power's win on Saturday lifted his earnings to $66,000.

No matter who is right, the Eberand family are in possession of a pair of marvelous money-spinners.
