Temper Not To Leave Punters In Tears

By Jeff Collerson
Temper Tears, a beaten odds-on favourite at his most recent Wentworth Park appearance, is set to atone for that costly defeat by winning Saturday night's 720m Ladbrokes Same Race Multi at headquarters.

The Michael Hardman-trained dog has box four but has just five rivals and will relish having a vacant box on his left.

"After Temper Tears finished second to Midnight Flash at Wenty on November 21 he pulled up a bit scratchy,'' Hardman said.

"I gave him some time off but I trialled him over 520m at Wentworth Park on Tuesday night and he clocked 30.40.

"That might not be a brilliant time but it is the best Temper Tears has recorded so there is nothing wrong with him now.''

Hardman could land a winning double as former Victorian Brickman, a new addition to his Goulburn kennels, has box seven in the 520m Ladbrokes Odds Boost Stakes.

"I gave Brickman a 520m trial at Wentworth Park on Tuesday night and he clocked 30.10 and I was rapt in that considering it was his first look at the track,'' Hardman said.

"But I'm not sure how he will handle box seven on Saturday because in his trial he found the rails quickly.''

Brickman's toughest rival looks to be another Victorian greyhound, Handsome Jack, who has box one.

Trainer Jessica Sharp also has Handsome Jack's litter brother, the highly rated Hadouken, in box six in Saturday's Free-For-All.

Sharp's husband Jason said: "We are giving these dogs a look a Wenty with a view to bringing them back for the heats of the Ladbrokes National Derby on January 15.

"Handsome Jack has good early zip and very smart mid-race speed, but he is not too strong at the finish.

"Hadouken possesses similar pace but gets to the line better so is a better dog.''

Handsome Jack though is in a far easier race and with a clean getaway could go close to leading throughout.

Firestone Alley has had just three wins from 40 Wentworth Park appearances but has notched a dozen placings and could break through for a well-earned success in Saturday's 520m Christmas Gift Next Week Stakes.

Firestone Alley has box two and is well positioned according to trainer Sam Simonetta.

"He likes to be near the fence but is a very slow beginner,'' Simonetta said.

"He pulled up well after finishing second to Maldini last week and he had box seven then so is better off this week.

"Firestone Alley will be hard to beat if he gets through the field when he starts making his run from the back.

"Obviously he is going to need all the luck in the world but he deserves to win another race at Wenty.

"He fell when he was definitely in a winning position there on September 12.

"I have not trained Firestone Alley throughout his career but he has been a terrific money-spinner, since I've had him he has won $20,000 in prizemoney.''

Firestone Alley, who turns four next month, has earned $50,000 in total and will add another $5500 to his stakes if he can score on Saturday.
