Cumbria Belle Looks Perfectly Placed

By Jeff Collerson
A massive drop in class from contesting a group one final to going around in a fifth grade should give Cumbria Belle her first Wentworth Park win on Saturday night.

Bred, owned and trained by hobby trainer Steve Fitch, Cumbria Belle has box six in race three, a 520m fifth grade, and should only need to begin cleanly to win.

Cumbria Belle was second in the early stages but ran off the track from box one when a tiring fifth to Lilly Banner in the group one Ladbrokes Peter Mosman Opal at Wentworth Park on July 11.

She had been runner-up to Lilly Banner in her Opal heat on July 4, after missing the start from box eight but handling the wide draw perfectly.

Before the Peter Mosman final Fitch admitted he was concerned that Cumbria Belle would want to move wide from her inside draw and when she did run out on the first corner, she collided with favourite Nangar Silk, who had box eight, and ruined the chances of both greyhounds.

Since that Wentworth Park race Cumbria Belle has won over 520m at Nowra in a fast 29.86, jumping well from box two and leading all the way.

Esther's Diva (box one), Fabulous Penny (box six), Cheeky Lass (box seven) and Zipper It Mate (box eight) are noted front runners and the clash of this quartet makes race seven, a 520m fifth grade, a fascinating contest.

On sectional times from their most recent Wentworth Park starts, the Charlie Gatt-trained Fabulous Penny should be the pacemaker if she begins with her customary dash.

When she was a tiring third to Firestone Alley and Drink Moet at Wentworth Park last Saturday Fabulous Penny posted brilliant opening splits of 5.40 and 13.78.

"She may not go quite as fast this week because she was very fresh last Saturday as she normally has a trial at Appin mid-week but the trials had been cancelled due to rain,'' trainer Charlie Gatt said.

"But Fabulous Penny had her normal preparation this week, with a trial at Appin, so she should get to the line more strongly.

"Fabulous Penny usually clocks 5.42 or 5.43 to the first mark so still has a good chance of leading, but I expect her finish off better at the end of the 520m.''

Wyndsor Rose has been placed in three from five Wentworth Park starts and gets her chance to break through after drawing box three in Saturday night's eighth race, a 520m fifth grade.

The Justin King-trained bitch had box seven when runner-up to One Fury in a slightly harder race at Wentworth Park on Wednesday night. and her trainer believes she is better drawn on Saturday.

"She has been jumping well and showing good speed from wide boxes but has been unable to get across to the lead,'' King said.

"I like her from box three on Saturday.''

Hardest for Wyndsor Rose to beat should be the Owen Langley-trained Vixen's Image, who will exit box one for the seventh time in 17 starts.

Vixen's Image's six previous appearances from box one have yielded a win and four placings.

Ebby Jet Power, box two, will be all the rage for Saturday's 520m Free-For-All and Mark Gatt, trained of that dog's two main rivals, Ritza Gloria (box seven) and Beau Herrera (eight) is not confident his pair can upset the favourite.

"Ritza Gloria and Beau Herrera drew alongside one another at Wenty last week and collided, bringing each other unstuck, so I'm worried the same thing could happen again,'' Gatt said.

"Ebby Jet Power is in terrific form and looks well drawn while Forners Flame, in box four, is also going great.''
