Legend To Head To Hobart For Group 1

By Jeff Collerson
Lismore Cup winner Fire Legend produced his finest Wentworth Park performance with a best of the meeting 29.74 on Saturday night and now heads to Tasmania for the Group 1 Hobart Thousand.

The Mark Moroney bred, owned and trained greyhound led throughout from box eight in Saturday's Free-For-All, clocking brilliant splits of 5.46, 13.80 and 17.89 en route to his 520m win.

Formerly trained in Melbourne by Jason Thompson, Fire Legend came back to NSW for the TAB Million Dollar Chase but failed to qualify for the Wentworth Park Grand Final.

"I decided to bring him home because while he won a stack of races in Melbourne, every time Fire Legend reached a big race final he ran into dogs like Shima Shine and Simon Told Helen and they were just a bit good for him,'' Moroney said.

"He is booked to go to Hobart for the heats of the Thousand on December 10 and while he won't have seen the track I don't think that will worry him.

"Fire Legend loves big tracks like Hobart and when he was with Jason Thompson he clocked near record times when having his first look at similar tracks such as Ballarat and Horsham.''

Hobby trainer Steve Fitch is aiming for next month's the Group 1 Dapto Megastar with Cumbria Belle following her impressive third and fourth grade win on Saturday night.

Cumbria Belle dwelt at the start but railed to the lead at the first turn, was headed by Rapallo, but came again in the straight to win running away by just under a length in 30.14.

"Because she had not raced since October 17 I had been concerned Cumbria Belle could have been a shade under-done tonight,'' Fitch said after Saturday's race.

"I had not done a lot with her so gave her a 365m trial at Nowra on Tuesday and while she went satisfactorily she didn't break any records.

"She has had only one start at Dapto, and that was when she finished fifth in a Million Dollar Chase heat on September 3.

"But the track should suit her and next month's Megastar there is worth having a crack at.''

Barcia Blue Boy, bought as a new-born puppy for $8000, was among Saturday night's most striking Wentworth Park winners.

Owned by Dawn Garrett and trained by dual Million Dollar Chase winner Peter Lagogiane, Barcia Blue Boy was having his first start since June and his first attempt at a distance beyond 450m when he led throughout, zipping over the 520m in 29.80.

Barcia Blue Boy began only fairly but showed dazzling pace to record first and second splits of 5.47 and 13.80 to notch his fifth win in six starts.

Barcia Blue Boy is a litter brother and kennelmate to Vicki's Queen, who won first up at Wentworth Park for the Garrett/Lagogiane combination on Wednesday night.

Vamos Penny produced an outstanding run home time of 11.75 when she posted her sixth win in 14 Wentworth Park starts for trainer Kerry Drynan in her 29.82 fifth grade romp over 520m on Saturday night.

It's no surprise Vamos Penny can get to the line so powerfully as she is a younger full sister to champion stayers Poco Dorado, Blue Moon Rising and Veloce Nero.

Trainer Mark Gatt will step Stanley Road up in distance following the dog's fourth Wentworth Park 520m win in five starts on Saturday night.

Stanley Road was last approaching the first turn but after railing through to be fourth on the back straight and third turning for home, he surged between rivals in the straight to win by just over a length in 30.13.

"He can run a middle distance and I am hopeful Stanley Road can stay so eventually I will try him over 720m,'' Gatt said.
