A Pair Of Fast Times for Smith's Pair of Winners

By Jeff Collerson
Prim and Proper and Unreal Ethics not only gave trainer David Smith a winning double at Wentworth Park on Saturday night but their identical 520m times of 29.74s were the fastest of the meeting.

Prim And Proper clocked her best time in 18 Wentworth Park appearances when she led throughout while Unreal Ethics, who won in 29.79 at Wentworth Park last Wednesday, trimmed .05sec off those figures to take out Saturday's Free-For-All.

Unreal Ethics, usually a slow beginner, jumped in front last Wednesday and got away cleanly again on Saturday to lead around the first turn.

"I have spent a lot of time trying to mend his poor box manners,'' trainer David Smith said on Saturday.

"Prim And Proper ran home tonight in 11.68 but that fast run home didn't surprise me because I have no doubt she could make a good middle distance bitch.

"But the prizemoney is not there in 600m races and because I doubt she could get 700m so she will keep sprinting.

"Having an empty box inside Prim And Proper tonight helped and there was not a lot of early pace in the race.

"Once upon a time you needed a dog with good early speed to win at Wentworth Park but that doesn't seem to be the case at present.''

Jodie Lord shared training honours on Saturday with Smith, landing a double with Just Terms in the top grade 720m event and with Spritley Ebony leading throughout in 29.89, third fastest 520m time of the night.

Lord holds a strong hand in October's group 1 Sydney Cup over 720m at Wentworth Park as Just Terms ran down her kennelmate El Rapido in a brilliant 42.14, with that pair relegating Blue Moon Rising to third position.

Boom youngster Simply Smudge missed the jump but showed good track sense to weave his way to the lead on the back straight before scoring his fifth win in nine starts in 30.16 on Saturday.

''He raced as if he had George Moore on his back,'' quipped trainer Peter Rodgers in a reference to the world champion jockey of the 50s and 60s.

"I was pleased the way Simply Smudge took the available runs tonight, as good footballers take the right options and so do good greyhounds.''

Princess Riot trialled disappointingly at LADBROKES GARDENS last Monday so plans to contest Friday night's group 2 Sires On Ice Black Top heats were abandoned and she was instead nominated for Saturday's WP card.

That proved a master stroke for trainer Peter Lagogiane and owner Jimmy Vescos as Princess Riot began brilliantly from box eight and led throughout to win by eight lengths in 30.01, clocking slick splits of 5.43, 13.82 and 17.97.

"Although her time was good that was the only occasion in her four WP wins that Princess Riot has not broken 30sec,'' owner Vescos said.

"Her recent form has not been too hot but she has not been beginning the way she can and she nailed the start tonight.

"And she has taken a while to find her feet again following a seasonal spell.''

Princess Riot's kennelmate Sneaky Marquee was favourite from box one but after wanting to shift wide when disputing second spot on the first bend, she collided and faded out of a place.

"I think Sneaky Marquee is probably better from middle boxes because tonight she was inclined to get wide when she was pressured by the dog on her outside,'' trainer Lagogiane said.
