Unreal: No Ricci To Worry About Tonight

By Jeff Collerson
Unreal Ethics was outpaced by Flying Ricciardo at headquarters last Wednesday but his strong finishing second resulted in his personal best 520m time and the dog looks drawn to notch his eighth Wentworth Park win Tonight.

Unreal Ethics has won two of his three starts from box eight and will wear the pink rug in the Ladbrokes Switch Free-For-All.

While he clocked 29.61 winning from the extreme outside at Wentworth Park on March 6, he recorded 29.54 behind Flying Ricciardo.

"It might seem risky to start Unreal Ethics so close to Saturday night's Golden Easter Egg heats but he thrives on racing,'' trainer David Smith said.

"If he was early favourite for the Easter Egg I might be more cautious but I might as well try and pick up this $4500 first prizemoney because he pulled up so well after chasing home Flying Ricciardo last week.

"Unreal Ethics handles box eight well, in fact he usually looks out to the right before the boxes open when he draws inside.

"He will run straight down the outside to the first corner but if needed he will rail underneath his opponents on the back straight.

"While Unreal Ethics can be pretty dumb as far as his box manners are concerned he is quite smart negotiating his way through a field.''

Prancing Diva has been placed in each of three Wentworth Park starts and trainer Ricky Brewer believes she gets her chance to break through when she exits box one in Tonight's Happy Birthday April Stakes, a 520m fourth and fifth grade.

"It is a strong field but she is ideally drawn and if Prancing Diva is in front on the first turn I reckon she can break 30 seconds,'' Brewer said.

"When she finished third last Wednesday she recorded 30.09 despite being under pressure for the early lead.

"I think Prancing Diva can 'find' a bit in the next couple of weeks.''

The fifth grade See You At WP Stakes, one of Tonight's two 720m races, looms as an intriguing contest between long-distance rookie Hundred Degrees, Dylan's Magic, who has had just one race in 10 months, and Fantastic Radley, who came from last when second over 725m at Melbourne's The Meadows last week.

Hundred Degrees finished stoutly to win over 618m at Richmond on March 5, stopping the clock at a fast 35.66 and running down Prim And Proper, who has had a win and two placings from four Wentworth Park 720m appearances.

Sid Swain, trainer of Hundred Degrees, said: "The dog's owner David Griffiths is a keen form student and he is convinced his greyhound will get the 720m.

"I'm never certain when they tackle that distance for the first time because the final 100m is always a worry.

"I have taken Hundred Degrees away from middle distances for the time being because he tends to get shuffled back as he leaves the boxes on those bend starts.

"Since he won at Richmond I have given him a trial over 700m at Bathurst and his time was good, although he did get a bit tired at the finish.''

Dylan's Magic won his only 720m test in a smart 42.18 at Wentworth Park 12 months ago but was resuming from a long spell when a solid finishing third over 618m at Richmond on Friday.

Fantastic Radley is the most experienced stayer, with two wins and three placings from six Wentworth Park 720m outings, but is usually last around the first turn and needs a reasonably clear run to figure in the finish.

Tonight's 11-race card features six heats of the Group 3 Ladbrokes Magic Maiden, which will lead into semi-finals next Wednesday before the $25,000 to the winner final on April 3, Golden Easter Egg night.
