Greb's Drinking To Continue Amazing Run

By Jeff Collerson
Greb's Drinking will be chasing his 14th win from his past 19 starts when he tackles Thursday afternoon's Signarama Free-For-All at Casino.

The Charlie Northfield-trained dog has box two and goes into the race with a 50 per cent winning record on all tracks for 23 wins from 46 appearances.

"Casino and Lismore are definitely Greb's Drinking's favourite courses, although he is slightly better at Lismore,'' Northfield said.

"Under the old grading system I would have been travelling around to different tracks with him to maximise his graded wins but the new system is made to suit track specialists.

"I have been racing Greb's Drinking twice a week, at Lismore and Casino, so he has been busy.

"But he thrives on racing and I've found if he misses a few runs he gets too excited and plays up in the starting boxes and then tends then to miss the jump.

"Greb's Drinking can handle any box but he does like to use a bit of the track.

"I bred him by mating my bitch Pop's Pest with a dog called Sulzanti, who was by Magic Sprite from Scissor Queen, a winner of 20 from 31 starts.

"Scissor Queen was a litter sister to Don't Knocka Him and my bitch's dam-line has always clicked well with Magic Sprite and Don't Knocka Him blood.''

BRIAN Smoothy's quartet of winners at Taree last Wednesday was the highlight of the local hobby trainer's 14 years in the sport.

Smoothy, a slaughterman at an abattoirs, won 314m races with Zambora Spur and It's Spring Time and took out a pair of 392m events with Trbojevic and Double Dream.

"My kennels are at Killawarra, just 20 minutes from the Taree track,'' Smoothy explained.

"I became interested in greyhounds through working with George Zahra, who worked in the boning room at the abattoirs and was a keen trainer.

"George is still involved with the Taree club but is not doing so much training these days.

"Best of the dozen I have in work is Chickiano, who is currently spelling, but I got a big thrill out of winning with It's Spring Time because she turned five in April and has now won 19 races.''

Back Off became one of greyhound racing's longest-priced winners when he led throughout at $101 at Grafton on Monday night.

Back Off not only scored by six lengths but clocked a handy 23.19 for the 407m so there was no element of fluke about his all the way romp.

Trainer Jake Northfield said: "I didn't back him but was not totally surprised by how well he went.

"Back Off does not always do his best but when his mind is on the job he can certainly run.''
