Ebby Upstages Hot Field At Bulli

By Jeff Collerson
Ebby Infrared's 19th win in toppling the mighty Good Odds Harada at Bulli on Saturday night was the greyhound's best performance according to trainer Michael Eberand.

The Bulli and Maitland Cup placegetter surged past Good Odds Harada on the first turn to win the 472m Free-For-All in 26.09, defeating the Million Dollar Chase winner by just over a length.

After the race Eberand, who shares ownership in the dog with Queenslander Dave Taylor, said: "Ebby Infrared is a really good dog now.

"He has learned from mistakes he has made in races in the past.

"After all, not many greyhounds can lay claim to outpacing Good Odds Harada in a race.''

Ebby Infrared's 26.09 in Saturday's top grade 472m event was .07sec outside the time standard for the meeting, with the Michelle Sultana trained flyer Unison stopping the clock at 26.02 in the final event, a fifth grade.

Unison has now won six of 14 starts, with his recent record an even more imposing five wins and two seconds from his past seven appearances.

Unison's consistency has been matched by the Peter Lagogiane trained Straight Shift, who recorded his fifth successive win and his 10th victory in 13 outings when he won Saturday night's 400m Free-For-All.

Straight Shift led throughout and covered the trip in a blistering 22.34sec.

"He nailed the start tonight and that made a difference to his time,'' trainer Lagogiane said later.

"Straight Shift has won many of his races despite dwelling at box rise but tonight he ran up to the sort of times he can trial over 330m at Richmond.

"There he regularly clocks 18.40 and 18.50 in trials but his problem on race day can be that he gets worked up when he hears the lure whizzing around.

"I deliberately did not trial him at Bulli before racing him here tonight, I just threw him in cold because I felt he might have a better chance of getting away quickly if he found himself at a new track.''

Utah Express completed a rare treble when he won on debut at Bulli on Saturday, taking out a 400m maiden in 22.30, sensational time for an unraced newcomer.

Utah Express is trained by Jason Magri for owner-breeder Joe Satti, who had won first-up with the dog's litter brothers Utah Ghost at Bulli a week earlier and with Utah Blues at Richmond on Wednesday night.

Satti's trio are offspring of his former smart race bitch Utah Miss, and just for good measure Utah Ghost, which Satti trains, was successful again at Bulli on Saturday.

Jason Magri has a high opinion of Utah Express, pointing out that he had been setting the dog for the Group 3 Magic Maiden at Wentworth Park which had to be cancelled due to the coronavirus situation.

"I trialled Utah Express at Bulli about three months ago and he ran a smart 22.60 for the 400m back then, so he has obviously improved plenty,'' Magri said.

"He has terrific early pace so has a good future.''

Former Sydney Roosters, Canterbury Bulldogs and Parramatta Eels first grade rugby league star Michael Appleby handled Saturday's third winner Another Storm, who came from midfield at box rise to lead at the first turn before winning a 400m fifth grade in a fast 22.35.

Appleby, who owns Another Storm, took the dog to Bulli on behalf of trainer Mary Wright.

Wright's husband Ken said: "Another Storm tore a back leg muscle when unplaced at Wentworth Park on January 29 and Saturday night was only his second race back after that injury.

"But we expected him to go close at Bulli because Mary trialled him up the straight at Appin on Tuesday and he clocked 21.25 for the 366m.

"That told us he was going as well as ever again.''
