Old Marvel George does it again at The Gardens

By Jeff Collerson

"He doesn't seem to know how old he is,'' quipped owner-trainer Jamie Bush after his rising six-year-old Come On George scored his 48th win in 87 starts on Saturday.

Come On George, who turns six in October, won over 272m at LADBROKES GARDENS, enhancing his already amazing strike rate.

Even more remarkable is that Come On George was a gift to Bush, a hobby trainer from Gunnedah who works in an underground coal mine.

Come On George won at his first start, at Maitland in January, 2017, but after failing to repeat that success at his next dozen races, the dog's owner presented him to Bush as a gift.

Come On George holds the Tamworth 457m record and won last year's Tamworth Cup, with Bush commenting: "Each week I think the wheels must be going to fall of soon, but he just keeps rolling along.''

Just two months younger than Come On George is the Evelyn Harris owned and trained Cosmic Bonus, who took his record to 65 wins and 39 placings from 135 starts with his last start win at Wentworth Park on March 21.

"He is raring to go again and will be back in action when I can find a race for him,'' Harris said.

"My local Grafton track is the only option for me because of the zoning requirement so I'll just have to bide my time.

"On Sunday morning my husband Leonard took Cosmic Bonus down to the Clarence River for his regular swim, where the dog catches up with his thoroughbred pals.

"Johnny Shelton, one of the leading racehorse trainers in our area, has two thoroughbreds who dote on Cosmic Bonus.

"One of them, Belflyer, who won the inaugural Kosciuszko at Randwick and over $1 million prizemoney, paws the ground waiting for Cosmic Bonus to come over and say hello to him.

"We have become great friends with Johnny and are now training a young greyhound for him.

"It is unnamed so far but he is hoping to call the dog Belflyer Bonus.''

SIMON Rhodes can take a bow after not only landing a winning double at Bulli on Saturday night, but with each his winners, Divya Bale and Henrow Bale, scoring their second successes in less than a week.

Henrow Bale won over 365m at Nowra last Monday in a slick 20.79 and followed that up with a 22.73 victory over 400m at Bulli.

Divya Bale scored in a smart 19.97 over 350m at Goulburn last Tuesday, finished third in a 297m event at Dapto 48 hours later, and then clocked 22.74 in a tidy Bulli 400m win on Saturday.

Rhodes said: "I have to confess that when I nominated her for Bulli I had forgotten that Divya Bale had qualified for a final at Dapto on Thursday.

"But after my dogs race I give them a bath the following morning and then let them potter around the paddock all day so they usually freshen up pretty quickly.''

Rhodes is currently home schooling his children and concedes he enjoyed the break away to go greyhound racing.

"One of our children, Chloe, is in year 10, and as I did not get past year nine, I find it tough going answering her questions!'' he said.
