The Sonia Hornery Stayers Cup named is named after the Wallsend-based MP who is an ongoing supporter and advocate for the sport of greyhound racing.

Previous winners of the race include Trunkey Bill, Chrissie Banner, Sweet Fire All, Bumpo, Zipping Kelly, Lochinvar Hugo, Mr. Shire and Ritza Piper.
