Young Stars Post Some Slick Times

By Jeff Collerson
Lady Wilson failed to qualify for last Saturday's Ladbrokes Million Dollar Chase semi-finals but clocked group one figures for the Wentworth Park 520m in her all-the-way win in a heat of the GRNSW Young Star on Sunday night.

Lady Wilson began brilliantly from box six and cruised across to the rails to lead all the way, reeling off fast early splits of 5.38 and 13.71 before running home in a powerful 11.49 to stop the clock at a blistering 29.26.

After drawing box six or seven in six of her seven latest races, Lady Wilson has been forced to become accustomed to poor draws.

She is desperate for an inside box and the last time she drew near the rails she won from box two in a sizzling 29.24 over 515m at Gosford on September 24.

Trainer Sam Sultana was not surprised Lady Wilson recorded 29.26 on Sunday, saying: "She won in 29.35 at Wentworth Park in August and the track is a lot faster tonight.

"It all came down to her nailing the start from yet another unsuitable box tonight.

"Lady Wilson is owned in Victoria by Brett McIntyre and I have not even met him yet even though she has now won four races at Wentworth Park.''

Victorian trainer Mark Delbridge's Paw Oswald took the lead at the first turn to win his Young Star heat in 29.42 while the Jason Magri-trained Santino Kade made full use of box eight to win in 29.44.

Country trainer Steven Jones expected his bitch Promises Three to win on Sunday but conceded he was pleasantly surprised when she led all the way 29.46.

"When she clocked 29.99 finishing second at Wentworth Park on October 2 that was the first time Promises Three had ever seen the track so I expected her to improve,'' Jones said on Sunday.

"She trialled brilliantly at Cudal during the week and she is a progressively good bitch who was ideally positioned tonight in box one.''

Dual Million Dollar Chase winning trainer Peter Lagogiane won't have a finalist this year but has a handy up-and-comer in Make Them Cry, who led all the way to win her Young Star heat on Sunday in 29.56.

"Make Them Cry is a litter sister to my good bitch Depeche and she had a great draw in box one tonight,'' Lagogiane said after Sunday's win.

"I knew she would get room to move because Ruination, who had box two, gets wide, but I was frightened of Sooty Keeping.

"If she had not been in the race I would have declared Make Them Cry a good thing.''

But Sooty Keeping dwelt at the start from box four and was the runner-up, after being second at the half-way mark.

Former leading Victorian trainers Steve and Krystal Shinners, who moved to WA a decade ago, landed a winning double on Sunday, taking out Young Star heats with Transcendent in 29.76 and La Sagrada in 29.46.

"Transcendent is a lot better than what his time tonight indicates,'' Steve Shinners said later.

"He went down on his nose at the start and I think he is capable of getting down to 29.40.

"I wasn't too concerned about La Sagrada's box eight draw because I thought she would run straight from the boxes to the first turn.

"My only worry was that she might get wiped out on that first bend but she got around safely and won easily.''

Forbes trainer Jack Smith is rarely without runner in a big race at Wentworth Park and Talk About Class gave him a Young Star finalist with his narrow win in 29.55 in a heat on Sunday.

The $25.000 to the winner final of the GRNSW Young Star will be held at Wentworth Park on Friday night.
