Buck Brings Luck To Sydney

By Jeff Collerson
Good Luck Buck, who has box one in race seven at Maitland tonight, completed his amazing rejuvenation with a slick 29.99 win over 520m at Wentworth Park on Thursday.

After finishing among the tailenders in seven races in Victoria, Good Luck Buck was returned to trainer Michael Edwards' NSW kennels earlier this month and has since raced four times for two wins and a second.

"I was his original trainer but then his owners sent him to Victoria and he did no good there,'' Edwards said.

"The Victorian trainer, who had become his new owner, contacted me and asked if I would take the dog back.

"I agreed but said I wasn't prepared to buy him, I would only pay for the transport cost.

"The deal was done and since coming back to me Good Luck Buck has won over $6,000.

"I don't have a magic wand, I think his return to form is simply because he is a one-man dog, he never leaves my side.

"Even when my son, who helps me out on race nights, goes to put the lead on him Ben (Good Luck Buck) usuallt walks away and comes back to me.

"So I'm sure he was fretting when he was in Victoria because since coming home he is a happy dog again and that is showing in his results on the track.''

She Is Fire earned a crack at next month's time-honoured Sydney Cup with her record-breaking win over 620m at Casino on Thursday.

The Mark Moroney bred, owned and trained bitch clocked 35.20, a slick .11sec inside the record set by Burnt Ends nearly four years earlier.

Heats of the Group 2 Sydney Cup will be held over 720m at Wentworth Park on October 12 with the $40,000 to the winner final six nights later.

While the Sydney Cup, first run and won by WALLY's Best at Wentworth Park in 1963, was worth $100,000 last year, Moroney isn't concerned at the prospect of a reduced prize.

"It is still a traditional prestige race and anyhow, $40,000 is still good cash,'' Moroney said.

"She Is Fire is the perfect greyhound because she can stay, yet she has the early pace of a sprinter.

"And she chases hard for the whole trip, she has a great attitude.

"When she gets to the racetrack all she wants to do is to get out there and run.

"She Is Fire deserved a track record to her name because when she won over 600m at The Gardens on September 14 she was just .01sec outside the record and when Exploded beat her in new record time over 660m at Grafton on September 8, my bitch's time was only .07sec outside the previous record figures.''

She Is Fire is a sixth-generation Mark Moroney bred and raced greyhound, and is a grand-daughter of Tick Away Fire, whose offspring have earned over $825,000.

Moroney, who was diagnosed with leukemia in January, 2010, received a clean bill of health after spending six months in hospital.

Two months later he won the Bankstown City Cup at Potts Park with Cathella Ice, a descendant of Fire Crisis, a bitch he had bought as a puppy for $350.

Mark Moroney is now comparing She Is Fire with his former champion stayer Fire Cape, who cost him just $600 but who won 27 races and broke five track records.
